Michael Moorer would not beat Jones. Why has that become the thing to say? Even the LHW Moorer was very flawed.
I find it astonishing that there are 13 on this board that think that Joe Calzaghe beats a prime Roy Jones Jnr.
Eubank is an interesting choice. Watson is a ludicrous one. Jones beats every technician at every weight between 160 and 175 to the tune of 5/5.
Why? Joe is fast, strong, very awkward, has a great jab and has a great chin. His work ratre and stamina are beyond question. He also does what it takes to win. He is way better than any SMW Jones faced. I seriously doubt Jones would knock him out, and Joe is hard to beat on points over 12. Jones would probably land the better shots, but Joe would land more. Could go either way depending on how the judges see it in my opinion. I can understand people favouring RJJ on this but people are allowed to hold views that differ from your own.
Because the two areas of Calzaghe's game that I admire the most are his footwork and his handspeed. In both of these areas he is thoroughly outstripped by Jones. A fighter going into a battle where his two greatest assets, the ones he rellies upon the most to get him wins, are thoroughly dominated by his opponent better have more than "does what it takes to win" or he will get his head kicked in. As is the case here. I'm pretty sick of replying to the old "he is better than any [insert weight division] that [insert fighter's name] ever fought" line, but here you are: Jones is better than anyone Calzaghe has ever fought, by around three classes. In the meantime, fighters Jones beat that I would have expected to beat Joe Calzaghe: John Ruiz. Fighters that Jones beat that would be a slight favourite of Joe Calzaghe: Bernard Hopkins. Fighters that Jones beat that would be 50/50 v Joe Calzaghe: James Toney. I can't think of one single, solitary peice of evidence on film or in lore that leads me to belive that Calzaghe has any chance at all against Jones. It's not that Jones is that much better than Calzaghe. He really isn't. It's just that Jones outstrips Joe in all the wrong areas for the Welshman. They could fight 10 times, Calzaghe wouldn't win one. Oh, unless you mean now?
I'm mos def with you on this one cat....IMO,at 168,Jones has no peers. In handspeed,power,movement...all of the above. I don't see anyone beating him here...never mind Calzaghe. At 160+175 however, there's a few ATGs who could whoop him.Including SRR,Greb,Dick Tiger,Hearns etc...this ATGs were close if not on par with him for physicality...Roy'd probably beat a few,but not all.No way he beats The Jinx,The Mongoose,SRR..Don't thinkso.
Here's a fun one since RJJ went all the way up to 193 vs. ruiz: how about RJJ against great small heavies: Marciano, Frazier, Walcott, Dempsey, Patterson. Guys who could have met Roy half way at 185-190. Frazier woud've been the worst for him IMO. Smoking Joe was never given credit for how fast he was of foot and hand-his left hook unfurled in split seconds. I think he'd KO jones inside 4 rounds with his power, speed and pressure. Maybee the best pressure fighter above 175 in history-look how frail and hopeless he made Foster look. He had the speed of foot and hand to catch Jones too. Marciano is interesting, because he was a great pressure fighter, had awesome power and a good beard...but he was slow of foot and may not have been able to catch up with RJJ. I think Patterson would be a less immediate version of Frazier, his combo of physical tools and superior power and size would get RJJ out of there pretty early. Haven't seen enough of Dempsey to judge. Walcott seems like a toss up. Anyone else wanna chime in on this one?
