You're exaggerrating. Jones's speed, mobility, and ring generalship had just as much to do with the masterclass that took place as Toney's weight draining. If he couldn't get motivated for that kind of superfight, too bad for him. He'd have looked not too much better had he been at his best anyway, as a fighter with Jones's style would always be hell for the flat-footed Toney.
I don't understand why people keep saying "He's only 3 years older than Calzaghe!" Folks age isn't indicative of being shot. Erik Morales at 28 years old was JFK style shot, MAB is in his mid 30s (I believe) and he's way past it. On the other hand JMM is 35 and is still performing at a prime level. Glenn Johnson and Bernard Hopkins are in their late 60s and still putting on great performances. RJJ was an athlete first, boxer second...when they lose ANY of their physical advantages they struggle, you see it in tons of fighters. Last nights fight says nothing about what would happen prime for prime. Especially when RJJ in his prime threw more than 8 punches a round.
my thoughts about the fight: 1. jones is shot but i was surprised that he lasted the whole 12 rounds with a bad cut maybe because of resiliency or maybe joe doesn't want to stop him and just enjoyed playing/toying with an obviously overmatched opponent. 2. a prime jones would still have some trouble with a current pound for pound calzaghe based on style but i doubt calzaghe could do what he did yesterday (exposing his face directly in front of jones without any guard). 3. some fans are making this to be a fair fight by saying that joe is an old fighter too but if you compare their current standings, calzaghe is one of the top p4p fighters while jones is just a sentimental name. complete mismatch of a fight and yet people are giving too much credit for joe on this one. kessler and hopkins are much better wins for joe.
