Layne would get flattened in a round or two ... a slow, limited, easy to hit , small one handed guy against a murderous punching Lyle ... a mismatch ...

You vastly underrate Rex Layne. He beat a few fighters much better than Ron Lyle. Layne was very durable, strong, had a powerful right hand, and had a solid workate. Layne also had a good left jab. I favor Lyle, but by no means was this an easy fight for him.

It'd be a fun fight while it lasted. Lyle takes him out late for me.

Layne is durable enough to take whatever Lyle can dish out and has decent late power, I like his chances to pull off a Satterfield kind of win, getting rocked early but overcoming his exhausted opponent or at the very least hustling a decision. Lyle struggled to put together a 12 round fight. Something to consider, Satterfield stopped more HW contenders cold than Lyle, he dropped Layne but couldn't finish him. Layne only got stopped in his prime when Maricano severed his jaw.

Layne would not last long under Lyle's power ... Layne could not stand Rocky's and Lyle was a bigger than Marciano. No doubt Layne had heart and could be tough but taking out light heavyweight Satterfield with his glass chin is not an all time accomplishment ... Layne was taken out by Charles right after being taken out by Rocky ...

Layne runs into a bigger, stronger man who was content on dealing with aggressive fighters. Not a good match-up for Rex.

I don't think I under rate Layne at all ... he was a tough, plodding, one handed, slow, small heavyweight ... he had heart, he had guts .. he had an OK right hand ... there was no quit in him but his limitations were made to order for a bigger, much stronger, more skilled, far harder hitting Lyle ... he'd get blasted out ...

I'd rate taking out Shavers, not to mention nearly taking out Foreman, as a better achievement than beating Satterfield.

Does footage exist of Lyle's fight with Bonavena ? Has anyone seen it ? Does anyone have newspaper accounts ?

Rex Layne- 6'1" with a 74" reach and almost 200 Lbs. He went 50-17-3 (34) overall and was stopped 6 times. He beat among others-

Turkey Thompson, Jersey Joe Walcott, Cesar Brion, Bob Satterfield KO8, and Ezzard Charles 1 out of 3.

Once he lost a couple of fights his career really went downhill.

He was the favorite vs. Marciano but was stopped in 6 rounds. He was also stopped by Ezzard Charles, Tommy Jackson x2, and others.

Ron Lyle- 6'3" with a 76" reach and almost 220Lbs. He went 43-7-1 (31) overall and in 0-1 HW World Title Fights. He was stopped 4 times.

He didn't turn pro until age 30 in April of '71. Before he peaked he dropped a decision to a prime Jerry Quarry in Feb. of '73. he won about 4 or 5 rounds out of 12 vs. Quarry. At his best he lost to Ali (LKOby11 in a fight stopped a little too quickly, Lyle was up on points), Foreman LKOby5 (he dropped Foreman twice), and the very crafty Jimmy Young x2 (in 22 rounds vs. Young... Lyle may have won 6 or 7).

    He beat-

Buster Mathis KO2, Gregorio Peralta W10 and D10, Jose Luis Garcia KO3, Juergen Blin KO2, Oscar Bonavena W12, Jimmy Ellis W12, Boone Kirkman KO8, Ernie Shavers KO6, Joe Bugner W12, and Scott LeDoux W10 among others.

Anyway, I think it would be a good fight up unti the end... which I think would be around the 7th or 8th round.

    Lyle by KO.

Shavers and Satterfield had similar strengths and weaknesses, though Satterfield was actually quicker with his hands and could actually box when he wasn't looking for the homerun. Satterfield has more good-great wins than Shavers. GreatA you are usually spot on, but this post confuses me.

Nearly taking out Foreman don't amount to much. I would take wins over Chares and Walcott over that. Layne actually hustled decisions over great fighters on their off nights, Lyle still got knocked out by them.
