Beterviev would get outclassed. He's got a punchers chance but that's all. I think some guys here need to rewatch some of Roys fights from back then.
Great post. Interestingly enough, John Ruiz claimed that the man with the quickest feet he ever fought was not former LHW Jones but the much taller and rangier former cruiser Haye, who for my money isn't as fast or agile on his feet as a young Usyk, who Beterbiev had three nip and tuck bouts with in the amateurs.
Any version of Roy after the Ruiz fight (weight cut) gets stretchered by Beterbiev and by "stretchered" I mean he wakes up in intensive care 6 days after the fight. Any version up to 2003 toys with Beterbiev.
Roy would toy with Beterbiev, Stevenson and Kovalev, losing MAYBE 3 rounds combined against them. Beterbiev and Kovalev are just too slow, and Stevenson might be a little fast, but you're not beating prime Roy in a game of speed. He would get beaten to the punch all night.
How is slow-ass Beterbiev gonna KO Roy, when fighters who were MUCH faster than Beterbiev were barely able to lay a glove on Roy?
I wouldn't have really thought Beterbiev would have beaten Gvozdyk on skills or footwork or speed. It's clear that Artur brings something else to the table.
Nice post, although i don't understand the use of an amateur Roy and a well past it Roy in this match up. Valle did drop him. Thats a valid criticism. But based on that, if Valle could drop him, John Ruiz should too. Not a comparison. Roy's reign was based on his ridiculous speed and reflexes. Not huge power such as Beterbiev and Beterbiev has always fought a brutish fight such as walking guys down and going to the body, him slowing down won't change that style much. Kind of like George Foreman. It's a fact that power goes last. As you age the reflexes and speed will slow and for someone like Roy who relied very much so on the reflexes he ended up paying for it. Notice all of his professional KOs happened after he reached the wrong side of 30 despite the fact that he fought pfp harder punchers and harder punchers in general than the guys that knocked him out like Ruiz, Castro, and Sosa Look at what age and inactivity did to Mike Tyson, no actually Sugar Ray Leonard is a better example. He was significantly more skilled that Ray. He ended up getting washed by Camacho. Yeah Leonard was older and was a lot more inactive but he didn't rely on his physical attributes nearly as much as Roy did, had a MUCH better chin than Roy and Camacho was pillowfisted at middleweight. Unlike Taver, Lebedev, Johnson and Green in their own weight class. You also had Roy balloon up and down in weight which also probably affected that punch resistance though age is much more likely to blame as i think Roy always had a suspect chin but possesed another level of speed to the point where nobody, not even a heavyweight could capitalize. Prime for prime I'd favor Roy to beat Beterbiev 7/10 times. As should most posters. He was on a different level to Beterbiev. I feel you probably just had a grudge against him because he was american. But who knows. Beterbiev is a monster puncher
