Joe isn’t greater than those guys on a P4P basis.

    Nowhere near.

H2H is obviously very different though.

    A 5’5 FW wasn’t beating Joe Calzaghe.

    No chance.

    They were all too small.

We’re talking here about a difference of 7-8 weight classes.

I'm well aware Greb fought nearly everyone in the 1920s. But for me boxers of the 1920s weren't at the level they were at in 80s-00s. The likes of Hopkins, RJJ, Eubank, Kessler, Byron Mitchell, Brewer look better on film than Tunney, Gibbons, Loughran. And in the sparring footage Greb doesn't look close to Calzaghe's speed. Boxers of the 1920s just weren't as good as later generations for my money.

I'm aware of Calzaghe's cautious nature and he was injury prone. He nearly pulled out of Lacy fight with an injury but his Dad didn't let him. However if he built up a PPV profile and it was the biggest fighting in boxing he would of taken an RJJ fight. Part of the issue was the lack of stateside exposure.

Calzaghe did try to get Hopkins in the ring. Frank Warren asked Hopkins how much and they matched it before Hopkins asked for more money. He also tried to get Winky Wright in the ring when Wright was P4P top 3. He also tried to get Otke in the ring. And ultimately he unified the SMW division beating all the belt holders in his mid 30s past his own prime.

Calzaghe better than Armstrong? Better than Greb? What are you smoking?

When someone like Corbett uses slapses and odd footwork, you call him amateur who can't box.

When Calzaghe uses slapses and odd footwork, he looks more skilled than Henry Armstrong.

Sure, no bias at all ;)

They’re miles ahead on a P4P basis though.

There were some great fighters of the 20’s.

    Guys like Benny Leonard.

I don’t think we can take much from Greg’s sparring footage.

It’s how they sparred back then, where they loosened up. I don’t believe for a moment that he fought in that manner.

Joe didn’t want to gain maximum exposure to build up a PPV profile.

He starved himself in order to fight at SMW, when the LHW division was stronger with guys like Roy as part of it. He also said that he wasn’t chasing Roy as he didn’t want tough fights. And his resume certainly supports that claim.

He never had the will or belief.

Just a few months ago in response to the call out by Carl Froch, he doubted whether he could have beaten Roy when Roy was in his prime.

There’s a reason he didn’t pursue him. And as great as Joe was, he sometimes struggled against lesser fighters. A prime version of Roy was operating on another level entirely.

Emanuel steward - said that Calzaghe would pose problems for any version of Roy. I tend to agree. Outside of the fluke first round knockdown that looked awkward like a forearm, Calzaghe pretty much won the fight going away against Roy. He's bigger than Roy with an insane work rate. Unless Jones catches Calzaghe cold, both he and Hopkins dropped him in the opening round, I see this as a tough fight. Calzaghe had great ring IQ, size and out punch in his favor. I wouldn't bet against Jones but it's laughable to write off Joe.

    Their fight was completely pointless.

Roy was on another level in his prime.

Faster, more powerful and much harder to hit.
