I really don't understand where you're coming from.

    They were no excuses.

It's a fact that Roy was 9 weeks from being 40 and he was no longer a top level fighter.

It's also a fact that in 2008, Joe was an elite fighter, after beating Kessler and Hopkins.

People have a right to point these things out.

If you believe that Joe would always have beaten Roy, then that's cool. Tell us why you think that.

Joe was a better fighter than Roy on the night. But Joe himself said that Roy was past his best and that a fight against him would be pointless. So you can't have any issue with anyone who discredits the win.

Of course Roy knew what he was getting himself in to. And Roy gave Joe a lot of credit after the fight. There were no sour gr*pes, just mutual respect. And nobody made Roy take the fight. But once again, you have to see the fight for what it was. It wasn't a great win for Joe. It was to top up his pension fund and to massage his ego. And it doesn't tell us how an earlier fight would have played out.

As far as I can see, nobody is saying the fight wasn't fair and conjuring up excuses etc. They've just pointed out the factors involved.

There's nothing wrong with debating a fantasy fight between them when they were both prime. Again, this is what the forum is for. For fans to share their opinions. There are numerous fantasy fight threads on this forum. There's literally a new one made everyday.

What does a fighter well past his best have anything to do with knowing what he is getting into concerning how a fight would have gone at a different time??? I can't even begin to think of how many fights would have been much different had they taken place at a different time... Even some of Roy's victories over faded past it greats.

I don't give Roy full credit for bearing McCallum or R.Johnson. Just as I don't give Calzaghe full credit for beating Roy. Age aside, Calzaghe was still a great fighter when he beat Roy, and I would have given Joe a great chance at unifying LHW and schooling Pavlik.. Something prime Roy would have had little trouble with at the time.

The version of Roy Calzaghe beat would have likely been stopped by Pavlik and Dawson.

I can only think that the guy believes that Joe should have gotten more credit or something.

I really don't know exactly what point he's trying to make.

    Correct.

You rate the wins after objectively an@lyzing all of the factors.

Prime Roy would have been too quick and too cute for Calzaghe.

But this is moot. At the end of the day, Calzaghe has the W and - cocaine controversy aside - hasn't embarrassed himself like Roy Jones continues to do so.

This is full of shit. You don't learn how to throw triple hooks without good fundamentals.

Roy could because his natural speed and gifted athleticism allowed him to.

Roy had decent fundamentals but let's not pretend he was a great or even good technician.

It's not a moot point on this specific thread.

It really is as a) it quickly goes from debate to heated argument, b) This won't be the last thread about this particular topic, c) we keep going in circles about it :| d) this isn't even a mythical match-up, where you can justify arguing about it.

The (sensible) majority agree that Prime Roy would be too much for Calzaghe. But too bad the shell of Prime Jones showed up. I'm sure Calzaghe regrets it :(

everything in roys 40s and starting with calzaghe, moar sheika and prime jeff lacey was simply a eurobum moneymaking exhibition tour for jones. He knew he was finished and simply making money from his reputation.

obviously jeffs American but such is awful ability that hes part of roys eurobum 40something tour for sure. so poor was he that 40somehing jones easily beat prime lacy.

    omar sheika? come on

simply exhibition bumtour matches for roy. But the fight was the pinnacle of joe calzaghes acheivements in joe's opinion - hes almost right, given that joe did so little in his career before Kessler his last bout.

This is why I dont bother reading all of your posts, because when I do I see a further lack of knowledge which further cements how you are ESBs most irrelevant poster.
    Sheika is also American :patsch
Green who came after Lacy is Australian
    Hopkins is American

    What a joker
