Vlad did not train for Sanders fight. Sanders was in the best shape of his entire life. He had been training for months for a fight with Valouev in South Africa. Sanders could have been a heavyweight champion for years if he had trained. Sanders would have won the gold medal in Olympics, but he was from South Africa and was banned. However, in a rematch, Vlad would have knocked him out. Vlad tried to get a rematch with Sanders, but Sanders refused, and for good reason. Sanders was called "The Sniper" for a reason. Vlad did not spar for that fight, much less with a southpaw. Vlad mostly lifted weights. I know about that. I posted it here at ESB "before" the fight happened. I knew Vlad might lose that fight because I knew how good Sanders was and that he had been training like a mad man. I posted it at German site, Ukrainian site, sent mail to Klaus Peter Kohl, e-mailed member of Team Klitschko, warning them. Vlad had just beaten Jameel McCline in McCline's prime and was let down by Kohl for not getting him a top ten opponent. It was a lose/lose situation. I did my best. In those days, Vlad did not even watch video of his opponents, unlike after he started training with Steward. They did not know what they were getting into. Sander's punches come at you backwards, he was very quick, esp. in early rounds, but he was in best shape of his life and Vlad also came into ring cold and without focus.
wlad got caught...end of story lewis got caught barerra got caught against junior jones in fight 1 hearns got caught by barkley in fight 1 terry norris got caught by simon brown in fight 1 wlad is in his prime now...as sanders was in his prime for prime wlad would out box him and keep him honest
All that was true and those rumors were out there. And we need to add that Wlad was bone dry coming in that ring that night. He'd never been bone dry before and that's the wrong guy to do that against. And then he didn't try establishing his jab either. At any rate, Sanders is always a tough match for Wladimir. Always. Klitschko holds that right elbow out & Foreman was the guy that said the punch to catch him with is a left hand over the top. But that right hand cocked at that angle is not deflecting that straight as an arrow left hand dart Sanders threw. And nobody throws a faster straighter left than Sanders and the only guy close is Moorer. But he isn't as tall and doesn't have that kind of reach extension to catch Wladimir. Sanders does. but I think Sanders is very dangerous for lots of other heavyweights as well. He's very fast and does not telegraph punches & was always that who needs this guy fight and that's a main reason he was never in top shape. He could never secure the big bouts and as such, did not train properly. He showed in that Wladimir fight when he prepared, he was a dangerous guy.
Corrie Sanders is the one of the most naturally talented heavyweights of all time. I followed his career for many years. It's a shame he was not allowed to fight because of politics.
Yes, I remember that fight also. Czyz said that he could not believe how good Sanders was. He said he did not know how good Sanders was. I could have told him.
If you watched that early Sanders development, the guy has a highlight reel of brutal ko's you could string together. A ton. Just like Morrison and Tyson & he puts guys in a heap. He had that amateur pedigree and all those wins over Botha. The thing with Botha is I think he looked more vulnerable & beatable and an opponent does not have to worry about a southpaw firing straight as an arrow ko shots. A whole different risk & in the recent era of risk vs reward matchmaking, a guy like a Corrie Sanders gets ignored to death. And Botha is the guy that gets the opportunities. That Sanders stock rose quite a bit when he got rid of Duplooy. That was a big win and he sure was giving up a ton of experience. And he was a lot lighter then. It seems like that division always has an "if only" guy and I think Corrie Sanders career is one that fits that moniker.
It sure would be nice to see an up and coming heavyweight with that toolset entering the ranks now, wouldn't it? Then again, there would probably be an over reaction to the hype and it'd be like a pendulum stuck in the all the way to the right position. Man, it's been pretty bad though recently and Solis and Harrison have never looked all that impressive to me & they have the top amateur pedigree.
