I think Sonny was better than Lyle but George was better than any of Sonny's foes I think this fight is decided from 1-5 rounds and who hits and takes it the best

I think Liston was more stoppage prone than Foreman was. Sure we can't really factor the Leotis Martin fight into the picture due to Sonny being past prime, but there was a greater aura of vulnerability there. He had his jaw broken by a relatively light hitting fighter, was badly cut against Clay and was brutally KO'd at an albeit old age, but still far younger than Foreman was when he was still getting hit by much harder punching men. A lot of people look to the Ron Lyle, Jimmy Young and Muhammad Ali fights when discerning Foreman's weaknesses, but I'm not sure they answer the riddle, especially when the circumstances are examined more closely.. Muhammad Ali was perhaps the greatest heavyweight that ever lived with a style that had nearly nothing in common with Sonny's, yet still had to take some powerful shots to come out a winner in that fight. At the end of the day, it was Foreman's stamina and frustration that cost him that contest.. Not his chin.. Ron Lyle met George after he had been out of the ring for 15 months, returning from a devastating loss and having uncertain feelings about his future in the sport.. The result was one of the most memorable heavyweight battles of all time with George as the winner. Turning things around for a bit, when have we ever seen Liston come from behind the eight ball like that to win a fight? I admittedly haven't seen all of Sonny's outings, but there are none that jump out of the book at me. Jimmy Young had to dance his arse off for 12 rounds and took some big punches to get a decision over a man who was throwing up and seeing hallucinations
of our creator in the locker room afterward.... And Liston's destructions of Floyd Patterson, Cleveland Williams and Zora Folley were certainly admirable performances, but are they truly on the level of George's ensemble against Frazier and Norton?? I don't know. One thing is for Certain. Foreman's skills and stamina are drastically down played in a lot of head to head fantasy bouts. In reality, he had one of the most effective two fisted attacks of all time.. He possessed power that left an impression on pretty much everyone he ever met in some 80 pro bouts.. He was good at cutting off the ring, working the body and and could tie up a man when he had to.. He could also take a hell of a punch.. His endurance issues typically only came into play when facing elite men and after many early rounds of high output. Liston had better stamina, but he wasn't exactly the poster boy for staying power either. His left Jab and dangerous right would be deadly against anyone including George.. But I don't think he'll have the luxury of casually picking out his shots and if he opts to slug it out at close range, he'll be risking himself against a man who is his superior in size, power and chin.. Not sure I'd bet money on this one, but I wouldn't want to hurt my wallet size betting too much against George..

Wepner said old Liston hit harder. He may have, or being hit so many rounds against him as opposed to knocked senseless early may have created that impression.

Liston seems to have more skills on paper. Foreman said the only man ever to back him up, & Liston was older. Though Foreman was quite young & green then.

Stamina & pacing are 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other.
If you do not pace yourself stamina may well be limited.
Foreman thouugh could not maintain a great pace as long as Frazier.
WHo himself did not have quite the endurance of Marciano...
    Because he expended more energy.

Agreed and unless the fight is in Zaire or Puerto Rico, stamina plays no part in it.

    This is of course true.
I train running dogs so have some idea about stamina . Wepner wasn't knocked senseless he was tkod on cuts against Foreman and Foreman was young and green in that fight too. Marcinao fought at a much more measured pace than Frazier who ,once he got into gear was pretty frenetic.Your points are well taken.:good

What most people don't know is Liston came down with the flu before the fight with leotis martin. He would've destroyed Martin in his prime. He broke his jaw when he faced Marty Marshall because Marshall made Liston laugh then punch him. I think prime Liston beats '74 Ali, he "paced" himself better than george and wouldn't punch himself out, he was cagey he would take his time, and he had far more stamina

I think everyone knows Marshall broke Liston's jaw .

    Stamina again?

Could Liston go 12 rds with the world champion when he was 40 ?Could he go 12 rds with Shannon Briggs when he was 48 ?
Could he go 10rds with the champion and ko him when he was 45?
All without sitting down once by the way.
