Leotis wins easier. Liston will be more willing to engage him head-on, which plays into the hands Martin, who was once known to almost be a contender.

IMHO Whitehurst fought to survive against Sonny as Eddie did in Frisco in 61. And Sonny WAS an accident waiting to happen in 69. His prime was FAR behind this fight.
And...Sonny MAY have been 40 or pushing 40 at that point, no one will know or ever know. Leotis was a fine fighter caught in an era surrounded by contenders and, unfortunately, was the odd man out.
A victory over Ellis in the first 68 elimination bout, IMO, would have put him right into the fray but, with the loss, it was back to 'fringe contender' status. Interesting that he (appeared) to be coming on with crisp counters at the end of the Ellis scrap but the nose and mouth injuries did him in.

Leotis looked like a good, tough fighter from what I have seen of him. He did not crumble. He came to fight. His amateur pedigree was good too, I don't think martin was an odd man out. Martin knnocked out Mildenburger. Thad Spencer and all blue Lewis. He beat Ellis in the amateurs.

Liston was not his best granted, but where were the signs in the ring that he couldn't fight no more, that Sonny was an accident waiting to happen?

Prime Sonny beats Martin but not too easily. Martin was a handfull

The 'signs' you mention are that he was gone after the Ali rematch, full of personal 'demons' so to speak, and 'came back' over in Sweden against pan fed stiffs which, for the most part, was why he wasn't invited to the elimanation tourney after Ali's exile. The only quality win he had from Ali 2 to Martin was his KO of Henry Clark (hey, an old fighter's Punch is the Last thing to go) By 68-69 Sonny was basically shot. In retrospect, the Martin fight wasn't so surprising. And I'm not taking anything away from Leotis, a fine fighter that never got the breaks he deserved.

Your response to being made to look the fool you are is to call us homo***uals? If we are/were gay, what bearing would that have on the quality of our posts as compared to say yours?

What an asset you are to this Forum?
    Still half term is it?
