So did 34 year old Inactive Corbett. That didnt stop him from outboxing Jeffries over the first 15 rounds. A prime 25 year old Ezzard Charles can certainly do better.

In general, you seem rather skeptical of the heavyweight division during the Corbett/Fitz/Jeffries period. Especially from Fitz to Jeffries. Would you say that this is accurate, or is it just a misapprehension on my part? :think

Hmmmm.... I do know that Jeff buddy was a fast runner on a straight away, but I can't say for sure he was good with constant lateral movement..... I do know that Jeff had good hand and eye coordination by the way he whacked a speed bag...... Many old dudes from the past didn't know how to properly tag that bag......... I know Jeff was an athlete for the early part of the 20th century, but I cannot envision Ol' Jeff being more spry and savy than Buzzard Charles..........

NOW! I stated before... In a phone booth, Jeff kills Charles....... In a 20X20 ring, Charles has a sure shot to win on points...... Cheers....

Does Jeffries look fast on his feet in any of the clips of him actually fighting ,do you think?

In the beginning of the fourth video, he does a little skip-ish thing that's similar to what you saw in the training clips. Then again, Sharkey came right at him in that fight, so it wasn't as if he needed amazingly quick feet.

Based on what I have read in papers and books, heard from people I respect, and seen on films...prime against prime...I would have to go with Jim Jeffries in this matchup. This is not meant to take anything away from Ezzard Charles; I liked him, and liked watching him fight. Even if it's a 12 or 15 round fight, as long as Jim knows about that in advance of training, he beats Ezzard...in my opinion.

    No he dosn't but:

    A. We only have a small sample as with the Fitzsimmons debate.

    B. The footage that we have is of him is fighting oponents who were prepared to trade with him thus it is likley to show only one angle on his game. Again we have the same problem with Fitzsimmons.

This has to be a joke. Charles possibly the best puncher Jeffries ever faced???

No way! not over Fitzsimmons, Sharkey or Choynski. In fact not over Johnson or Goddard either.

Your information is incorrect. Corbett was 33, not 34 and the first 15 rounds were about even according to credible round by round reports.

Charles in fact was Ko'd by a middle weight, down 30 times in his career, and is greatly over rated as a heavyweight ( Not light heavyweight ).

Very few if any historians think Charles was a better heavyweight than Jeffries.

In my opinion fans of Marciano and Louis tend to over rated Charles a tad since he gave them tough fights.

That" but" is looming very large,
From what you personally have read about the first Corbett fight is there anything to suggest that Jeffries was quick afoot ,do you think?
Bearing in mind that Corbett was 33 , had been inactive for 2 years, and had not won a fight for 6 years.

I kinda' see Charles doin' a job against ole Jeff like Holyfield did over Foreman in 1991, or Spinks did over Cooney in '87... Don't get me wrong.... I know goddamn well Jeffries is much greater than Cooney, and fought much younger than Foreman was in '91, but stylewise, a lotta' similar glitches there.............. Does anyone feel me there????

I would go with the more modern but not present rules...the 15 rd fight and I agree That there could be a difference in the distance ...I see Charles winning this one over the 15 rd limit by a UD in a lively fight
