Not talking about the green prospect from 1982 or the late 90s imposter but a fully developed, experienced and battle hardened champion meeting up with a fighter of similar style Gene Fullmer.

How long can Gene stand up to Tony's slashing fists?

I say he falls in 4 brutal give and take rounds, similar to the Frazier Stander bloodletting of 1972

Fullmer KO 3 Ayala. There is nothing more tailormade for Gene than an undersized fighter(ask basillio and paret).

Suzie you got it backwards! It's Gene that is tailor made for TA. Tony has a vast edge in power and Gene walks straight in. He'll break Gene apart and turn his head into mush. Where the hell you get these crazy ideas?

Seriously, how tall was Gene, 5-8? Tony is probably the same height or better and is just starting at 154. Hell, you werent even around when Tony was fighting that's why you dont know anything about him

Fullmer within a few rounds. Ayala was hurt badly by the likes of Mario Maldonado. He'd get schooled and smashed to pieces by Fullmer. Take it easy there, chum.

Fullmer in a crowd pleasing brawl wears Ayala down in about 7-8 rounds or so.

    Late 90's imposter??

Ayala always was an imposter.A myth created by the Duva's and blown out of proportion by his persona and imprisonment.

He keeps getting matched in these fantasy fights with proven, battle hardened warriors based on some knockouts of journeymen and outright hacks and an overrated sparring session with Cuevas.

Even worse is that people like you reckon he beats a real man like Fullmer.

    Based on what evidence?

He never even got around to fighting second tier guys let alone the elite so we have no way of knowing how his career would have even progressed once he fought someone who regularly hit him back.

What's to say he wouldn't have been destroyed and ruined by a Hearns,McCallum or Duran when he stepped up in class? It's happened before and since and likely would've happened to Ayala imo.

Ayala gets far too much attention for his scant achievments even if you buy into his supposed "potential".

Oh and Fullmer would've flogged the crap out of him by 5th round stoppage.

I know Fullmer was a very strong and thick mw, but Ayala was big and strong too, Ayala was bigger than Basillo and Paret, he was a physically strong MW when he came back.

This thread bothers me as much as a Valero VS Duran thread would, Rooster.

You know I don't have a problem with this result, though, given Fullmer's toughness, it might last a bit longer. Still, I can't see too many people lasting against Tony's billyclub-like whacks.
Why so many of these posters are so dismissive of El Torito simply blows my mind. The writing was on the wall, yet they still refuse to see. Bias at its worst.

Fullmer batters Ayala to the canvas like against Paret, although Ayala might not last the beating for as long.

Ok hen but how do you arrive at three? Basilio, a welterweight lasted 14. It's almost as tho ESBers want to dwell on Tony's KD early in his career after 1 year at pro. Tony had his critics back in the day also but I truly believe that the only way Tony could be stopped is imprisonment. Who outside of hagler could take him? I believe that in the summer of 82 he couldve taken Hearns, Benitez, and Duran and Tony was just warming up. Victory came all too easy for him
