Tubbs at his best was a smooth operator, his Achilles heel was his chin but Mathis doesn't have the power to test it so Tubbs would be clear sailing in this one
Tony Tubbs. Buster Mathis probably peaked as an amateur. He looked pretty good against Frazier in the Olympic Trials. He didn't seem to look as good as a pro.
I can't bet on Tubbs. He's the kind of guy who lets you down. I don't care how good his potential was..it was never realised and it showed only in flashes. I respect the guy because he really knew stuff. Real aficionados can get the subtle stuff he could master. What confuses boxing fans is thinking its okay to rate on ability alone. let's face it, Tony was the guy if you gave him a golden opportunity he would just screw it up royally. I mean can't miss kind of stuff. Turn up tomorrow he can have a million dollars for nothing. He wouldn't show. That's the kind of guy his career made him look. And That's without looking into his lifestyle. He put weight on just to miss out on a bonus! Ritchie Giachetti walked out on him in camp because he was in no shape to even fight. And that's documented. Can you imagine? In camp, sparring partners, cooks, trainers, teams of people all laid on and they're focusing on a guy who is in no condition to fight, who won't train, get out of bed and is a danger to himself etc. Can you picture it? So would I bet on him beating Mathis? I would not bet on him to beat Charles Hawtry, and if you don't know who he is google him. It's the kind of fight he would mess up.
