a few of yours don't make sense, like the losses to Coetzee, Cooney, and Smith

A 1983 version of Coetzee, could stop Berbick. Cooney, at his best, if he caught Berbick, Trevor's gone. Smith has the strength, chin, and power to beat Berbick. Remember, this guy lost to S.T Gordon back in the day, so anything is possible.

But Berbick was tougher and higher-stamina than all those guys.

True, but one punch can change anything. And Cooney had that. As well as Smith. And Coetzee had that right and some boxing ability.

I agree, all had a good punch, but Berbick had chin and stamina on his side, but was also powerful as well. Berbick of course, is not impossible to beat, but as I see it, Smith, Cooney, and Coetzee have the odds stacked against them.

What period of time was Berbick prime? Like much of the rest of his era, he was up and down.

true, but 2 answer the question: from the time he beat his first real contender (Tate: '80 to the time he registered his last big performance, and hopefully a win: Thomas: '86)

That’s fair, but also underscores my point in that he lost to Renaldo Snipes and ST Gordon (back to back) in this frame. Consistently inconsistent, haha.

I suspect had he not fought Renaldo and were Mr. Snipes put on this list, there would be near-unanimous agreement that Berbick would beat him. But in reality, of course, he lost to him.

And if he had fought all these guys in their primes during this ‘peak’ period for Berbick, he’d have found a way to beat a few and lose to a few and have you scratching your head either way.

EDIT: Just looked up the video and see that Berbick-Snipes was called by my favorite boxing announcer (although he wasn’t the primary boxing guy on ABC during the Cosell era, usually getting the undercard assignment — although looking at the card this was probably the only televised bout from it): the late, great Chris Schenkel. Not a ‘boxing guy’ per se and I won’t pretend he was the most knowledgeable on the sport, but it always seemed to me it was like watching a fight with your favorite uncle in the living room. I’m going to have to watch this one soon as I don’t remember seeing it and it’s 10 rounds with my ‘Uncle Chris’ to enjoy.

You're kind of right about the consistent inconsistency, although I still think that the Gordon loss was equally surprising even in light of the Snipes loss, because, the Snipes loss was a surprise cuz Berbick lost to a younger, less accomplished heavyweight, but then lost to a cruiserweight. A clear gap btwn those losses for Berbick I think, but I still agree w/ your main point.
I was glad 2 hear u liked Chris Schenkel. He was not my favorite when it comes to knowledge either, but he did have a good voice for commentating, and I always enjoyed him. It's interesting that he should get the lesser fights than Cosell as well, because I recall he covered boxing many years b4 Cosell. I recall that he announced Patterson-Johannson I. You should watch Berbick-Snipes though before u forget it. That's one of my all-time faves. One of those thrillers that was comical and explosive at the same time.
