Because Joe Louis was a lot better than him and had all the tools to beat him.

True. Like him or loathe him,and I loathed him a lot of the time, there's no doubt that Tyson was the best heavyweight around for a period of three/four years.

Correct, (although I would disagree it was Turner). Some people are under the impression that Holyfield was this brilliant thinking fighter but the fact is he carried on fighting at heavyweight as he did as a cruiser, and it took a lot of unecessary punishment for him to realize that he had advantages over these guys in speed and boxing ability and he was never going to be a knockout artist. If were talking 1990-91 for the purpose of this thread, Holy's not even close.
Even Emanuel Steward had a tough time holding Evander back in the second Bowe fight. Holyfield was just overtaken by his need to fight and get hit. Its almost what charged him up and I dont think he fully ever committed to being more of a disciplined fighter as proven by his inconsistent performances. He boxed well against Mercer but like hell against Czyz and Bowe III.
Personally I think the Holyfield of 96 has a better shot against a prime Tyson than Evander of the early 90's for the reasons I already mentioned.

As I said, I dont think he ever made a full transition, but it started in Bowe 2 with Emanuel Steward who spent an entire training camp trying to convince Evander he could box better than he could brawl. He fought pretty smart against Mercer, but dreadful against Bowe 3 and Czyz. Fought a very controlled fight in the Tyson fights. He started fighting pretty stupid against Moorer in the 2nd fight before getting tagged and settling into a better fight plan.

It was never as consistent as it could have been, but I think its pretty obvious he was less of a raw slugger as he was leading up to and including the first Bowe fight.
