Thanks ETM, you sound like the only person who knows what hes talking about Frazier was stopped by a good puncher Tyson was always stopped by good boxers Im not up to scratch on Fraziers record, but i dont know how many quality guys he actually stopped. I know Tyson stopped a load of guys who'd never been stopped before and knocked out a load of guys much faster than other mutual opponents such as Holyfield, Foreman, Bowe and Lewis amongst others. I know Marvis aint no Joe, but the warning signs are there. Remember Joe trained Marviz and was confident he had the right style to beat Tyson and we all know how that went, all 19 seconds of it. Tysons own comments on Frazier (Marvis) were, "when you jab, he bows like this, when he bows down, im going to catch him with a right uppercut". According to Tysons book, Frazier/Foreman is Tysons favourite fight, he loved watching Foreman lift frazier with those uppercuts. Tyson may have never admitted it, but i think deep down he knew he always had Fraziers number. No way is Frazier making it past the sixth round. Frazier is not just going to withstand the early Tyson assault and magically turn the fight round. Tyson at his best was one of the best finishers ever, Frazier will finish this fight asleep. (See Tyson vs Thomas Ko) the odds favour Tyson
Frazier had much more tougher opposition than Tyson and he never got knocked out like Tyson did. Yes he was stopped but he was never counted out. Better chin than Tyson.
Tyson, just a much better, bigger, more skilled, faster, better defence, and more powerful. Just better in every way.
How did Frazier have a better chin than Tyson? Tyson withstood Bruno,,Smith and Ruddock's punches. Frazier was dropped by Bruce, twice by Bonavena and 8 times by Foreman! Much tougher opposition? Unranked Zyglewicz, unranked Mathis, unranked Daniels, unranked Stander and unranked Foster.
Just because Joe Frazier has a win over Ali, doesnt make his resume superior to Tysons or mean he fought tougher opposition. Take away Ali from Fraziers resume and what have you got? Tyson would beat all of Fraziers opposition and look much better doing it as well. Tyson might be missing that one important win, but other than that his resume is head and shoulders above Fraziers. He has wins over Berbick, Tubbs, Thomas, Tucker, Biggs, Bruno, Williams, Ruddock, Botha, Golota, Spinks, Holmes and others too. Tyson also has longetivity over Frazier, despite spending most of his career nowhere near his best and spend 4 of his careers most important years, locked up. Frazier was never knocked out like Tyson was? have you not seen what Foreman did to Frazier? Tyson finished his losses against Douglas and Holyfield on his feet, the only guy who truly knocked Tyson out was Lewis (and that was after leaning on him too). Id hate to think what Lewis may have done to a 36 year old Frazier, after all he made a career out of beating left hookers Not only that, Tyson may have lost to Foreman, but he would have performed a whole lot better than Joe did. Even if this fight goes into the second half, my money is on Tyson. Tyson showed against Ruddock, (twice, back to back) that he can stand toe to toe and trade with a dangerous puncher, did Joe ever do that? if not why not? Foreman as big as a puncher he is, is known for stopping Norton, Moorer, Frazier........am i seeing a pattern there?
Bruno is severely underrated as a puncher, out of his victories only 2 guys ever lasted the distance with him, one of those being Oliver Mcall
Frazier susceptible early in the fight but if he can hurt Mike early could stem the tide of aggression from Mike. With that being said I think Mike had 2 hands that had fierce power while Frazier had that potent hook to the body and head, let face it that hook stopped the iron chin Quarry and dropped and staggered a strong Ali so it could hurt Tyson and if Frazier is still building momentum by round 3-6 the odds would be shifting in Joe's favor....Mike would roll through guys who had no hope to win but Frazier like Marciano had no fear of a man so fear would be a mute point. I think it boils down to who gets off 1st and how well Tyson reacts from feeling the power and will of Frazier A lot of intangibles could factor in here.....If I HAD to bet I may lean with Mike early and Frazier Late, I would make both bets if it made $ sense
I go with the consensus here. A fast starting Tyson would probably connect before Frazier has a chance to warm up. Frazier's best chance is to still be there after six rounds or so and start breaking up Tyson on the inside. It's a big ask for that to occur, though.
By the time the fight gets to the point where Tyson's weaknesses begin to come into play, Frazier would very likely be too pummeled to take much advantage of them. And I don't buy the notion that Tyson was totally useless in the late rounds of a fight. The only guys who beat him were ones who had his number from the opening bell and in most cases, when he was past it..
interestingly enough, James " Bonecrusher" Smith who fought Tyson and was trained by Joe Frazier at one point, was selected for the panel of " battle of the legends" in Ring magazine back in the early 90's. They did a fantasy fight between Tyson and Frazier. James picked Mike to win by early round KO.
I don't like the style matchup here for Joe. Tyson was a much faster starter than Joe, who was somewhat vulnerable in the early going. Tyson also had a wider variety of punches, and quicker. Some of Tyson's weaknesses was his tendency to get frustrated and look for one bomb to do the trick, being open for uppercuts (natural for shorter swarmers to be vulnerable to this punch), being a front-runner. Of course it helps to not be intimidated by Tyson. But you have to have the right game plan and style for that to really matter. Frazier doesn't have that, so he probably gets stopped.
