I think Tyson would KO Joe Louis. Bigger, faster and his chin was rock solid. Mike could take away Joe Louis`s leverage by pressing the fight forward. Joe didn't have the best footwork or balance. Tyson just has too much. Bad Style matchup for Joe Louis
Louis would be 10-15 pounds lighter. Douglas didn't dance, he beat the **** out of Tyson. Louis would not be coming forward aggressively looking for a knockout, he would be using lateral movement and setting traps with his footwork. Swinging wild, leaping hooks at a great counterpuncher with a great jab can get you shut down, but Tyson's aggressiveness, power and chin give him a good shot at knocking Louis out. Of course, if he gets timed and leaps into a right hand counter, he gets hurt and probably stopped
I'd expect Joe Louis to come out jabbing aggressively, and hooking off the jab and dropping the right in behind the jab - he'd have the edge over Tyson all the way. Tyson would be dangerous for a few rounds coming in, but Louis would have the edge at range and in close. Louis was too smart a boxer, and a ridiculously hard puncher. People really under-rate Louis's all-round boxing ability.
Prime Tyson is last of the old school/classic. I get what you're saying but modern would have to start when the weight lifting was bought in so 93-94+ ? Louis by KO if Tyson can't him out in 5.
Douglas used lateral movement, his jab and countered Mike on the way in. Louis doesn't have lateral movement or a jab nearly as effective as Busters. He is a great counterpuncher though, his strength in the match up is his right counter as Tyson moves into range and his uppercut in range.
McGrain wrote an awesome article on Joe Louis's style, must read. You can google "breaking down Joe Louis." Tyson definitely could KO the brown bomber. But Louis would win the rematch by KO. The people I think could beat Tyson were Liston, Ali, Foreman, and Bowe, maybe Young. But Tyson could beat all of them as well. With Tyson's historical knowledge and Rooney in his corner perhaps they would study Louis and avoid traps. As for Foreman Tyson I go back and forth, that fight is pure mayhem.
That's not dancing. Louis had excellent lateral movement, it was surprisingly quick and fluid for someone who has gained a reputation for being lead-footed. He was shuffling but not always slow. He was an expert at circling back and tricking his opponent to move forward onto a right hand (he managed to do this a few times to Ezzard Charles of all people), and yes he did have an excellent jab (he shut down Max Baer with it completely in the opening round of their fight). The only advantage Buster's jab had over Louis' was that it was lengthier and had a bit more authority.
The deciding factor here would be that Tyson would be coming forward, and Louis would lovingly prepare a killing ground for him. Both of these guys are incredible finishers, but when two finishers collide, I tend to favour the one who can fight on the back foot.
tyson probably outweigh louis by 5 pounds? prime vs prime tyson weighed 218 and louis 197.... ok 5 pounds... lmao.. tyson by ko... louis had absolutely nothing over tyson in his prime, and his style was horrible for louis... tyson was faster, stronger, hits harder, he was as good puncher, as accurate, he took a much better punch than louis, he was more agressive, he had a much better defence, louis was static like hell and he could not run from tyson.... the only realistic final is tyson by ko
if your name is not george foreman you can“t beat a prime tyson trading blows in the early rounds, and louis did not have the chin to survive with a young tyson early. david tua would have the chin, he would have his chance late with tyson(if tyson decides to fight smart he would outpoint tua easily, but if they fight trading fire, then tyson could have problems)
