Prime v Prime: Tommy Hearns versus Pernell Whitaker at Welterweight?

I don't think Hearns would had tried to outbox Pea for 12 or 15 full rounds, Pea can't hurt him and Hearns would had tried to walk threw him and stop em.

To much of a natural size and strength advantage. Tommy would be able to just walk him down because Pernell would not have the power to keep him off.

I can't see any way Pernell can win this.

 

He tried to do the same against Benitez. Are you forgetting that Whitaker was a sublime defensive and pure boxer?

Well are you forgetting Whitaker prime was not at Welterweight? I just think Pea was too small for a ww especially when you put him against a fighter like Hearns, while Benitez was physically bigger and had more pop then Whitaker.

Anyways I just don't see Hearns trying to outbox Pea like I said and I believe sooner or later Whitaker gets caught with one of those fast right hands from Tommy and finish him.

It's possible, don't get me wrong, but your analysis of the unfolding is shoddy. You're speaking in fantastical terms here. Fights don't often play out the way you've typed above. I think the most likely scenario is something similar to what dpw417 posted. There is no way any fighter is simply walking Whitaker down given his defensive abilities and skill off the backfoot.

I also think Whitaker, never being a man to merely fight to make the distance, would switch up tactics at some point and look to make Hearns uncomfortable on the inside, likely clinching and using inside clinching tricks, along with a heavy body display, to throw Hearns off his game.

Whether or not he is successful is up to debate, but I can't see any Welterweight walking him down. His toughness was proven as conclusively as it gets against Trinidad when he was pretty much cooked goods. It's difficult to see anyone performing more dominantly over a prime Pete.

 

Anyone who reads my posts knows that I rank Prenell Whitaker very high.
As well as that I think a good boxer with a large length advantage should beat a great smaller boxer. As long as he uses his G-d given advantages to his advantage. Tommy Hearns defently used his size to h8is advantage. Not only was he a very good boxer he was a great boxer.
Hearns had only lost once at 147. To Ray Leonard by 14th round TKO in a fight he was winning.
I don't see Whitaker getting stopped. I think he is too good of defensive boxer for that. He dose give up 9" in reach. I think Hearns is going to make it very hard to cover that ground.
If Hearns stays on the outside I think he will win a comfortable decision.
If Hearns becomes too agrisive. I think Whitaker can eak out a close decision.

 

Your smoking,i really like Pea and he is a ATG but this is the 1 matchup thats all wrong for him,the 1 + he has in this fight is a very solid chin but that doesent mean a whole lot against a almost prime Hearns,i think he would last until round 6,same for Mayweather,except his defense is a smidgen less and not quite the chin of Pea,he would be lucky to make it out of the 2nd round.If Pea goes to body and hurts Hearns he may last the distance but likely he gets stopped in the 6th or 7th it could be a brutal beating to.

 

Hearns. Reach advantage would be too much, he could pick him apart from range with his jab alone, and his hand speed and punch output would overwhelm Sweat Pea's defence. The height and reach difference would make it hard for Whitaker to mount any kind of effective offense. That's before we even come to the power.

The thing with Hearns is he was so tall and rangy, it was like a welterweight fighting a super middleweight. And a very fast, skilful one with a great jab and great power.

Hearns would possibly KO Whitaker brutally within 5 rounds, or cruise to an easy decision.

 

Whitaker would be forced to become more aggressive in this fight I think, which will lead to him getting hit more. In an attempt to give himself a chance of winning, he might end up getting stopped. If he stays on the defensive, Hearns jabs his way to a comfortable decision win.

 

It's tempting to think that but Whitaker did have a chin that was tested against some big punchers like Ramirez and Trinidad.

Admittedly Hearns hits even harder than them, but I would have to back away from saying it definitely ends by quick KO. Possible but not certain.
