I'm saying Margarito in a razor thin instant classic. Difference in the fight would probably be Vargas getting knocked down once at some point.
Whats there not to like about Vargas? his style is fun to watch, but I honestly think that he simply did not have what it, and when you talk about a prime Vargas vs a Prime Margarito, you take the Margarito you saw in the Cotto fight, and put him in there with the Vargas you saw against Quartey or Trinidad and what do you get? WAR!!!! but who can out last the other guy? that is obviously Margarito
Quartey is completely different fighter to Margarito though. Quartey is a good puncher and he has great jab and a good defence. Margarito is virtually the complete opposite of that. Who hits harder than Trinidad circa 96 ? Trinidad is not a bad Boxer either. Cotto is small compared to Vargas. It probably would be a war, but Margarito does not have fight changing power for me, allthough he did turn the Cotto fight on its head, but i think Vargas has much better ring craft than Cotto.
There's also the "Mexican pride" angle to factor in. If these two had fought neither one would have backed up an inch, which would have to favor Margarito. Prime Vargas had very underrated technical skills, but they would go out the window in this matchup.
Had Ike stepped it up in the fight with Vargas he would have or could have pulled it out, it was too late to get it done by the time he did hurt him in the 10th, Had Ike been the Ike of Old I dont think we would have saw Trinidad vs Vargas. But let me explain this, you dont have to say anything to me about Ike Quartey,,,,,,,,,,,:dealBazooka:deal
He could of pulled out yeah, but how much of a part did Vargas play in not letting him do that is what you need to ask yourself also.
This I am aware of, However if you know boxing then you understand Ikes position as well, a few years away from the scene only to come back and fight at a higher weight against an undefeated champion, He had to play it smart difference in size and power may have been a factor and could have costed him and so could the ring rust. However I think if Ike challenged him a bit more he would have spoiled it, I am glad things played out the way they did, we got Vargas Trinidad as a result. However I just dont think Vargas was really that good, I mean prior to him fighting Winky what has he done? nothing and its like you said he lost to Winky in your eyes as well. So that means Vargas really only won one of his big fights, which was Quartey, and when you look at that fact how does it make you view Vargas as a fighter? he is a decent fighter but lost all of his big fights, all of them! its not to discredit the man, I am saying this so I dont over credit him neither and that happends all to often on these forums, what I can say is when he was younger and committed to the sport he looked to be the next guy to come along and kinda take the place of DLH, but that Winky fight threw it out all the window for me.
Some people have to remember that in two fights with Santos Margo did not look good which is the reason he came back down to 147. He was hurt by Santos in more then one ocassion and a stronger hitter like Vargas would indeed had put a dent in Margo's chin. Vargas would had used his handspeed on power on Margo and made him quit on his stool or bust him open.
