I'd probably say Vargas simply because he's naturally bigger man. By decision that is.

The Vargas that beat Bazooka against the Mayorga that had just gone 2-0 with the Viper would be quite a match-up.

I guess it depends on how hard you think each one hit relative to their mutual conqueror (Tito), since both are going to get hit quite a lot with their styles. Somebody's getting put away inside schedule.

    Vargas or Mayorga, late.

Thats all I can say with certainty. Mayo was tougher, the bigger hitter, and the brawls that Fernando often got himself into favor Ricardo for this reason. But Fernando has a much better technical base, and actually has defense, even if it isn't great, its better than Mayorga's.

I think it would depend on how much Vargas decided to brawl. In a toe to toe, bite down on the gumshield war, there just aren't many at 147 or 154 I would take to beat Mayorga outside of absolutely murderous punchers like Trinidad.
When the opponent decides to add more technique and smarts, and has the ability to do so, he gets much more vulnerable.

By this reasoning, Mayorga would have to be favoured.

Not really. I think Vargas was a pretty strong 54 pounder, and Mayorga wasnt. Vargas had good boxing skills to setup his power when he was at his best, and Mayorga didnt. Mayorga has to be the most overated fighter in boxing because he was able to get into Vernon Forrest's head. Forrest lost those fights mentally with Mayorga, and really we never saw that kind of outcome with another world class fighter he faced.

vargas SHOULD win and easily. better schooled, better technique, more power, solid chin before tito and the nut shot festival. i just see him picking apart mayorga at 154, who really was a little chubby for that weight anyway

Thats a big call, I dont think anyone really rates him that high to begin with...He might be a bit of an overachiever because he reached so high whilst being so technically raw but there is no doubting his physical ability, it can offset more classically schooled boxers sometimes.
A lot of boxing is mental and it was on Vernon to be professional and deal with that ****, cant take anything away from Mayo he bashed Vernon fair and square in their first bout...and psyched him out enough to edge the rematch (though I personally had Vernon just ahead from memory)

Well I agree with this. He probably was a bit of an overachiever. Every gym in the world is loaded with guys that fight this way, and personally I always hated sparring with them, but he probably was one of the most successful wingers ever.
Mayorga just seems to be overated quite a bit and really because of the Forrest fight. We saw a tough brawler that usually came out on the short end in all his other fights and I dont think he was ever close to the level of Vargas at his best.

A PRIME, motivated Mayorga? Against the Vargas that showed up for Ike?

Damn! Now THAT would be a mega fight.

I really, really dont know. Im favoring Vargas's strength, size, and better ability, but Mayorga is no weakling himself, and back at his best was a decievingly quick with his power shots.

What a fight it would have been.

So tell me the excuse for Mayorga owning Forrest in their first fight? Your going to try and tell me that Mayorga was in Forrests head in the first fight? When Forrest was coming out like he was the king of boxing, having just beat Shane Mosley, signed a new HBO contract, and you could tell on the way in to the ring he felt he was on top of the world?

Then he comes out and tries to hammer Mayorga into submission, and if it was almost any other boxer that night on the opposite end of Forrest, including a prime Shane Mosley, they would have more then likely recieved a beatdown.

Mayorga took Forrests best in their first fight, and beat him down. Thats the only reason that Forrest was mentally effected in the rematch, so the whole point of that Mayorga only beat Forrest because he was in his head is mute, because he was only IN his head because he owned Forrest in their first fight.

And if Spinks had fought like a man, and not fallen to the canvas every other round, and Mayorga got credit for a knockdown he did, and didnt get deducted points, he would have added a prime Spinks to his ledger as well.

Mayorgas prime was the Cruz fight, the Lewis fight, Forrest 1, Forrest 2, and Spinks. Before the Spinks fight Mayorga was saying he wants to retire, hes been fighting his whole life and he wants to spend time in Nicuruaga. With his lifestyle, habits, and fighting style, he was never going to have a long prime, and once he stopped training hard enough to make 147, he became a slower, sloppier operator, and then after he went up to middleweight (a weight he should never be at, period) to fight Trinidad, anything past that is pretty pointless when talking what Mayorga could do in his prime.

Mayorga may or may not be overrated in terms of what he actually achieved, but make no mistake, the Mayorga that showed up for the Forrest and Spinks fights, would have been a task for any fighter outside a handful of ATG's that match up well with him.

No I think Forrest got caught up and tried to knock out Mayorga. In the process he got nailed. All that other stuff is hogwash

    Ah ok...

God i love the excuses that get thrown around...

Oh... the first fight, well... Forrest just tried to knock Mayorga out... so who cares.

Oh the second fight? uh... well, the second fight Mayorga was in his head, so that fight doesnt count eather.

Stupid and lame excuses are all those are. Fact is Mayorga beat a Forrest that tried being assertive, and he beat a Forrest that tried boxing him. Spin in whatever fits the 'mayorga is overrated' agenda, but those are the facts.

And yes, the thought of Mayorga not being in his prime for the Hoya, Vargas, and Mosley fights is hogwash. Great points.
