OK, here's one of those matchups that epitomizes 'Styles'. Jimmy (I love him) had the grit and style to hang with Ali, Foreman, Norton... Jimmy will not seriously hurt Floyd. I won't go into detail wanting others to comment but I see this as a, perhaps, stylistic nightmare matchup for Jimmy. IMO? Floyd in a UD not quite being able to catch up to the wily Jimmy or a Patterson stoppage at some point.
Floyd had blinding hand speed, and was an excellent body puncher. Jimmy also attacked the body well, but the way Patterson positioned his torso made it a more difficult target. It took a harder hitter than Young to deck a fully matured and more ring savvy post title Floyd, who Ali identified as the most skilled of his title challengers. He'd take a pretty clear UD here.
We all know how technically savvy Young could be, but I don't even think he deserves to be in this thread. Not against a prime Floyd at least.
Jimmy just didn't have the offence to keep Floyd off of him, and thats the crux of this matchup. Some jabs, some straight right hand leads, but Patterson would be too much movement for Young to set and land combinations, and Floyd would unleash his to Jimmys head and body. Floyd but clear UD or maybe late stoppage.
Floyd UD It's interesting seeing Young picked to be possibly stopped a bit against the likes of Holmes and Patterson.
I started the thread because this is a perfect example of styles. Young was outstanding against Lyle/Ali/Foreman/Norton four fighters who, I daresay, many on board here wouldn't give Patterson a snowball's chance in hell against.
Yes, you are right. Floyd had or would have had a difficult time against Messrs. Lyle/Ali/Foreman/Norton - fighters against whom Jimmy did quite well. But styles make fights and I am inclined to agree with those who say that Patterson would have outpointed Jimmy Young.
Personally I think Patterson would have beaten Lyle and Norton. He´s a class above them as much as he is a class behind Ali and Foreman at hw.
