Willie Pep, who had 241 fights with only 11 questionable losses, vs. Lomachenko, who has, at this point, about 10 fights. Dimensions are similar with height and reach going to Lomachenko. Speed similar. Power questionable. Footwork very similar too. Who has Featherweight supremacy if they fought it out?
I've seen 45 seconds of Pep's fight. He was a beast, a legend...but different times, different games.
70 years apart, haha. Tough to put two guys with so many eras between them in a "hypothetical fantasy fight." Might as well be whole different worlds... All we can judge by is what they accomplished.
Russell Jr. was ranked in the top 10. Some could argue he didn't deserve it, but proved at least some of his worth immediately after his loss to Lomachenko. Martinez has long been ranked. I rate him higher than most do, as many have scored him the loser of many or even all of his close decisions/draws. Walters was very highly rated going into their fight. Deservedly so. But boy did he flop in their fight, time will tell if it's as good a win as it seemed at the time. Sosa was top 10, too. Pretty impressive run for so few fights, must be said.
Are we saying who accomplished more? Or if we opened a time portal and had them both step in and fight each other? I have to say, almost ALWAYS, the fighter of the future will win if it's a time portal scenario. I think it makes more sense to judge them by what they accomplished in their era.
Was Gary ranked by RING was he? He wasn't ranked by TBRB...i checked though and you're right, Martinez was #7 - which is the same as Sosa off the top of my head.
I'd say a fair way of looking at it is: He has beaten 4 ranked opponents. 1 very highly ranked and viewed; Walters. 3 ranked toward/in the lower half of the top 10; Russell, Martinez, and Sosa. Russell Jr is an odd case. Some could say he didn't deserve to be top 10 at all going into their fight and he only has one victory over a ranked opponent himself in Jhonny Gonzalez, although it is a very nice one, which came one year later.
TBRB have him facing two ranked opponents. I'd like to know what RING had him doing. Either way, he's on his way now; i can't see him facing too many unranked guys from here on in.
I like to bring up this point when discussing fantasy fights of guys separated by decades... Lets not drop Willie Pep 70 years into the future to fight Lomachenko. Lets try dropping Lomachenko off 70 years in the past, born into that nutrition with those training techniques fighting that often with that era of boxing rules. And just like that, people previously so sure of themselves were left with a whole lot of thoughts. Always bring this up in the "Vitali Klitschko vs. Joe Louis" sort of debates.
