Primo Carnera TKO 9 Ray Impelletiere 1935

I always think Primo Carnera and Vitali Klitschko look shookingly similar. I think Vitali was better though.

 

I disagree.

I think that Carnera's inside game was better than either of the Klitschko's quite frankly.

 

Go for it, then I will do the same for the Klitschko's.

At least Carnera had an effective inside game.

 

Except Vitali was more skilled, hit harder when he chose to, threw a better variety of punches, was harder to hit, had a better chin...

 

Carnera was a better technician.

Yes I said it!

Vitally was a better fighter, but because he hit harder, took a puncher better, had more killer instinct, and was a better ring general.

A small heavyweight could have some success fighting like Carnera, but would get killed fighting like Vitally.

 

I disagree that they look awful. What strikes my eye is that they seem to tire pretty quickly. Carnera starts out with quicker hand speed than either Klitschko usually displayed, but doesn't take long to slow down.
Also, in my experience when people say old school fighters look awful, nine times in ten what they are really saying is, boy they sure are doing a lot more clinching, grappling, and infighting than you see today.

People highlight the minor technical faults of guys like Willard and Carnera, while ignoring the downright glaring technical faults and technical gaps of guys like Bowe and the Klitschko's.

People say that they can point out technical flaws in Carnera, well I can point out whole dimensions that were missing in those guys!

 

Carnera was a better technician than Vitali. He was more coordinated too.

Vitali was a better fighter overall. But Carnera has fast agile feet, he could use angles like a smaller weight fighter, and his jab was better.

Wladmir was a better technician and fighter than both.

 

Yeah it’s kind of frustrating when you want to discuss nuance of substance in the face of glib analyses like the ones you refer to.

 

I know Vitali made all sorts of technical errors, but that doesn't change the fact that there was a clear disparity in skill in how Vitali & Primo respectively utilized their physical assets towards winning.

If you believe Primo's record matches up with and is indicative of a fighter with "great skill" to bolster their very real great size, than I don't know what to tell you.

I thought we were over this Primo Carnera revisionist garbage several months ago? Seems like it never actually left port.

I wonder if our grand kids will read these posts, and then watch Lewis vs. Vitali with a face of pure confusion.
