Primo Carnera vs Victorio Campollo and Uzcudun I and II, footage

Carnera was the prototype for a super heavyweight. He lacked the fighting experience and durability to be truly dominant, but he was among the first to make effective use of his size advantages by utilizing an effective jab, uppercut and the clinch.

There were boxers as big as him around, such as Campolo, but they were not as well-schooled when it came to boxing. Campolo was pretty much destroyed in their fight as was Jose Santa. He proved he was undoubtedly the best big man of his era and deserves to have a better reputation and legacy than as a clumsy fight-fixing oaf.

I don't agree when people claim that the very big 'super-'heavyweights of the 1930s were more lacking in skill or agility than the same sized fighters now.
Excepting one or perhaps both of the Klitschkos, the biggest men around nowadays don't show anything Carnera and even Campolo don't show.

Carnera was a pretty good boxer. He was smart and moved well on his feet for such a big man. He often kept his opponents off balance. He had some variety in his arsenal.

I think he had no real snap in his punches, and he didn't have a great chin. I also believe that he was built up on lots of set-ups, and some of his opponents took dives. (I'm not sure how unusual that is though, I doubt he's the only heavyweight champion who benefitted from such matchmaking).

If he was around today, he'd be built up and hyped just as much, and he'd be marvelled at as a "modern super-heavyweight".

 

Three years later Campolo went the 12 rds distance with Primo without being floored.
Maybe the fact that the fight was in Buenos Aires had something to do with that?:think

 

Primo was a predecessor of today's super heavyweights ... he does look like a Klitschko ... the only problem was that he had Wlad's chin without his power ... and he got hit too much ... no bout he had some skills ... he had stamina, he had a jab , he put some combo's together and fought with a ton of heart .. he simply had zero power, a dicey chin and huge holes in his defense ... when matched against old, slow much smaller guys or mch lighter guys he was able to hold his own but in any sort of match up with out over whelming advantages his limitations became transparent ..

Da Preem I think has been sold short by history. Really. He's better than he's ever been credit for.

I wonder if he genuinely couldn't punch, or if he wasn't really taught how to sit down on his punches?

 

I agree with those who say Carnera was no puncher, how then do we account for his 72 kos in 88 wins, and his 70% ko record?:think

Primo was a Valuev type circus act without Valuev's chin. Any random modern day HW like Pulev would knock the living **** out of Carnera's glass chin.
