These "quotes "directly contradict what Louis stated in his auto biography . He said Carnera showed him nothing and that Baer tried to quit in their fight. Larry Gains was in the ring with Carnera, in fact he beat him convincingly, I asked him what he thought of Primo, he just laughed.

Yes, and on the other hand Fury has been boxing since he was a little boy.
But I'm not interested in arguing the toss on such minor points.

My point was a simple one : Carnera was good as some fighters in today's top 10. That's better than some people will claim.

I can agree with this but with the caveat that todays top 10 is the worst in my memory, and Joe Louis was champ when I was born. In fact I would say it is as bad as the 30's when Carnera came along.

    I wasn't being disingenous.

I compared to Carnera to men who are in today's top 10. That's all.

You might not put much stock in amateur fights, but you'd be wrong in that, IMO.
A kid from a boxing family who has been boxing all his life and fought at international level in the amateurs, turning pro at 20 years old, .... has a massive headstart over a 20 year old strongman who has just been plucked from the circus.

I don't think they necessarily contradict.

Baer did quit at the end while Carnera's power may not have been impressive to Louis. This doesn't mean he could not have been impressed by Baer's ability to take the punches as well as Carnera's left jab and movement for a big man.

Gains got put on the canvas by Carnera. I'm not surprised that he wouldn't hold Carnera in high regard as he beat the man who went onto become a world champion while he did not even get a shot at the title.

Well, that is compatible with the point I was making : the big 'super-'heavyweights have generally not improved on Carnera.

You don't put much stock in Carnera's early fights either. Nobody does.

Obviously a lot of them were against opponents less than willing or able to put up a real challenge. But this has been the case in a lot of fighters' career. Carnera gets a disproprtionate amount of criticism due to the fact that he knocked over a lot of tomato cans. Some may have been outright fixes, but nothing has been proven on film, and there is quite a bit of film on Carnera.

Carnera only started taking on legitimate opposition into his 30th pro fight. He lacked real fighting experience compared to the Klitschko brothers or a Lennox Lewis who have boxed since they were kids. But he was not worse than the likes of Tyson Fury, that was the original point. Fury may go onto become a greater fighter but I don't see it happening.

I would agree with this also, but then they are not up to much anyway, imo.

How would you prove a fight was fixed?

Corners throwing in the towel prematurely, rubbing irritant in their boxers eyes ect ,are about as definite as you can get. I think at least 25% of Carnera's fights were ones in which he could not possibly lose. I think both Stribling fights were fixed, the Gorman fight , Peterson x2, Wiggins, Clisby x2, Godfrey,Chevalier, Clark,Rioux.Trafton. Prove it? NO. The ones I would be pretty sure of are Chevalier, Clark, Rioux , Peterson x2 .

I have doubts about the uppercut that kod Sharkey too.

Carnera might be rated today which isn't saying a whole lot given the pathetic state of the division.

What his mobster crew would not be able to do today would be to tour the tank towns arranging set ups as they went , because TV would expose them.

I've seen loads of tank jobs on TV.
I cannot remember it ever ruining the build-up of a contender or young prospect's career.

I would say that definitely Carnera was better and is greater than Shannon Briggs, a true champion in recent eras......

And you would be prepared to put your money where your mouth is on that? Interesting, I think you would lose your dough.

No......but don´t you think Carnera looks a bit more skilled than Briggs ?
Briggs was tough and hit harder, but I can see a variety on Carneras game that I can´t see in Briggs......
