The supporters of modern fighters are always keen to emphasize the importance of size, when matching abn old timer against a larger modern fighter.

This will be a good test case to see whether they are consistent in their argument, or merely apply it selectively, to further one group of fighters over another.

Does perceived class come into it tho? I haven't seen may big upping Carnera in here apart from about 4 people. I've also seen countless guys 200-220 picked in here over Carnera so size didn't seem to come into it then. Jones has comfortably defeated a decent 220+ fighter who went on to beat Rahman next bout and run Valuev close as well.

Lets see what springs forth from the Classic well. I know if Jones was matched against quality SHW's like Lewis and Bowe he would get short thrift but Carnera is no-where near that league tho he's certainly no mug either.

Yeah size is important but Carnera is slow enough for RJJ to outbox. I'll pick him.

Put RJJ against Marciano, Louis, Dempsey or Tunney and I'll pick them.

Carnera defended against former Light Heavyweight Champion for some
    comparative information:

    Tommy Loughran (112 23 8)
    division light heavyweight
    stance orthodox
    height 5′ 11½″ / 182cm
In an interview late in life, Loughran said his loss to Carnera was a pre-arranged fait accompli: "I had to knock him out to win, I had to agree to that". Footage of the fight is limited and scarce, but Loughran contended he had Carnera in trouble in Rounds 4 and 10, "but then, when I couldn't finish him, I knew the thing was over". The decision a foregone conclusion, Tommy Loughran told Peter Heller in April, 1972, "I beat (Carnera), no question about it".
    more:

Thomas Patrick Loughran (November 29, 1902 – July 7, 1982) was an American professional boxer and the former World Light Heavyweight Champion. Statistical boxing website BoxRec lists Loughran as the #7 ranked light heavyweight of all time, while The Ring Magazine founder Nat Fleischer placed him at #4. The International Boxing Research Organization rates Loughran as the 6th best light heavyweight ever. Loughran was named the Ring Magazine's Fighter of the Year twice, first in 1929 and again 1931. He was inducted into the Ring Magazine Hall of Fame in 1956 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991.
His effective use of coordinated foot work, sound defense and swift, accurate counter punching is now regarded as a precursor to the techniques practiced in modern boxing.

Loughran fought many middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight champions in his career, including Gene Tunney, Jack Sharkey, and Georges Carpentier. Loughran even achieved a Newspaper Decision over fistic phenom Harry Greb, whom he first met at age 19. As a light heavyweight, he defeated two future world heavyweight champions: Max Baer and James J. Braddock. Loughran finally fought Primo Carnera for the heavyweight title but lost a decision.

    Primo Carnera vs. Tommy Loughran
1934-03-01 : Tommy Loughran 186 lbs lost to Primo Carnera 270 lbs by UD in round 15 of 15
    Note
    • Originally scheduled for February 22, the bout was set back six days because of a conflict with a number of social events on that date. It was then postponed another day due to rain.
    • Carnera was a 5-1 favorite to win.
    • The day after the fight, the Associated Press reported that there was an estimated crowd of 15,000, of whom a third were there "on the house," and the gate receipts were between $40,000 to $50,000. When the official count revealed a paid crowd of 8,624 and a gate of $44,598.
    • There was a paid crowd of 8,624 and the gate of $44,598.
    • Carnera outweighed Loughran by 84 pounds. It was the largest-ever weight difference in a title fight until Nikolay Valuev fought John Ruiz for the WBA heavyweight title on December 17, 2005. Valuev outweighed Ruiz by 86¼ pounds: 324 to 237¾.

Agree. Although I don't know if I can pick Tunney over RJJ. That could be close.
