Used footage from every fight of his I could find for this one- 14 in total. It really is a shame that despite having a near six-year reign with his title, there's so few fights recorded or up for us to watch now. Just imagine if Charles had better people in his corner, management or otherwise... Now that'd be something. This content is protected @SonnyListon> @Flo_Raiden tagging y'all specifically because I know you guys enjoy my stuff.
He was an interesting, entertaining fighter. though I saw it only years later and had the benefit of hindsight, one could very well imagine his late rally against Marvin Johnson earlier in his career as a sort of awakening, as if he told himself then and there, “ I just went 10 rounds with Marvin Johnson, and had him in trouble late. I CAN do this.” It’s an interesting fight to watch for sure.
Good call-out. Williams was excellent, and fun to watch. Curious how people think Williams-Moorer would have unfolded. Always thought Williams would have matched up well there, and may have worn MM down and stopped him. Wouldn't have bet on it though, since Moorer had plenty of power to hurt Williams as well. Williams was in serious trouble vs. Czyz. Certainly Moorer could have hurt him as well. Of all the match-ups that never happened when I was following the sport, Williams-MM ranked way up there on my wish list. Would have been a fascinating fight. Williams-Hill would have been interesting as well.
Love watching PCW. Great stile fast with excellent inside work. Great that hes named after his majesty would now be king Charles Williams the 3rd
Good fighter. Became a fan watching him get off the floor to dominate Bobby Czyz. The rematch was good too. Salsanchezfan is completely correct about the Marvin Johnson fight. He went undefeated over the next 20 fights, should never have faced Henry Maske after 15 months inactivity and boiling himself down to super-middle to face James Toney was a huge mistake.
His hands were extremely fast for his size... He didn't throw these long, complex combinations, but he could throw very sharp, exact punches on the inside at frightening speeds. All of those punches would put you on the canvas if you didn't see em coming- And sometimes, even if you DID see em coming. It's definitely impressive that amongst the 14 fights we have footage of, Williams knocked down his opponents 7 times (maybe more cause I haven't watched the full Winbush fight, terrible quality and very boring) through all of em. I thought that knocking down Kinchen was pretty impressive.
It definitely seemed like the fight that made him who he was. He had ripped a good win over the unbeaten Anthony Witherspoon at the time, but still, I don't think anybody expected a 12-3-2 guy to do this well against a then 2 time LHW champion. He was mostly dominated against Johnson, but he still was able to land some pretty good combinations and sneaky right hands in-between it all. The run he had up till the loss to Maske (who he would've dominated had he kept himself busier) was pretty great, though I do think he was on the winning end of sketchy decisions before he won the title... I scored the Salerno fight in favor of James- He looked very out of it that fight. But, all things considered, that 20 fight win streak had pretty good names attached to it. Jeff Lampkin James Salerno (sketchy decision, but still) Bobby Czyz x2 Swindell Kinchen Delgado Etc. I don't think he did that bad at Super Middle (he actually performed quite well against Toney), but it was still a very bad decision for the end of his career. I feel like he could've beaten Maske had he ran it back, and he would've been a hard fight for most guys at the weight had he just taken a different fight rather than Toney. Imagine he faced Liles or Nunn at the time rather than James- He would've had a better chance.
I thought that Williams - Moorer would've been a real firefight... Every time that I see that possible unification match get brought up, I see most people say that Michael would win one-sidedly, but I really can't see it that way. Charles was a lot more proven at LHW and definitely much more experienced compared to Moorer at the time, not to mention that he seemed to have the better chin between the two of em, and could recover better when put in danger. I feel like Williams would've been put down early, but would come back around the middle rounds to stop Moorer for good.
Yeah. It's good to have guys like Sims or Williams for highlight reels cause it's real easy to match songs to em, but it ain't always that easy. Like "El Poema" Antonio Avelar... What the hell am I supposed to do with that?
I hope a world that we have a unification berween Stiverne vs Charles Martin for WBC / IBF belts in Heavyweight.
