Incredible war. The amount of flush power punches landed in this one is awesome. Real-life Balboa vs. Creed. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APC65UvyB84[/ame]
It does not get much better than a double TKO... Sadly the fight finished off Williams as a force (Sosa winning the rematch). And to be honest, although Sosa came out of the bout, with the title of best chin in boxing, RJJ proved otherwise, and Sosa never could get another big fight there after.
I'd say that Williams was already a spent force coming into this fight. Sosa got the better of the action for the most part, and was unfortunate at the end.
You could argue the fight ruined both guys. Williams' career was over after these fights, they finished him off. Sosa was a tough fighter but never quite got there, a B+ type. Blown out by RJJ a year after the first fight and then never getting back into a big fight.
good fighters, great fights. Both knocked out by the best around that time though in Toney and Jones.
He got back a bit of kudos after the classy fight with primed Toney, a win over Sosa was meant to lead to bigger things. But hindsight shows you are right, Williams' lack of activity in the early 90s, went a long way to coting him his Light Heavyweight crown, and he never could quite recapture his glories of the late 80s as a 168lber.
