I think you're being hard on McGuighan there Olu he fought and beat some good men. It's debatable whether he avoided Nelson even though that fight was never made.I think Barry was a better fighter on the way up than after he won the title and at that time I believe he could have given Nelson a tough fight although any version of McGuighan would have lost against Nelson who was another level up.

It was his choice. My point is that how many fighters could do that, be competitive and get totally slated for it?

I dunno, it's prolly the generation gap but pommy's like Randy Turpin, Terry Downes & Nigel Benn, Hamed just doesn't seem to fit as the Brit GOAT somehow.

I think the thing that worries me about the modern British greats, has been their aversion to fight outside of the UK.
Those I mentioned did not have "Commuter" style travel, but the modern ones did, but seldom used it.

Be that as it may, Naz was some fighter.
I think that his flair sometimes blur our memory.
He was an extraordinary puncher & the few granited chinned opponents that went the distance had their ears boxed off.

After the Medina fight, I thought his only flaw was in his flighty footwork.
The fighter that worked him to a routine & could get inside when Naz "landed" would be his victor.
It would be 5 years & a dozen defences before a Bahamas addicted party animal would meet Barerra, but he still went the distance with him.

MAB was 3 years late. Had that fight happened back then, I think Naz would have got a standing ovation from his aforementioned "Peers"

    However,,,

I went cold on naming fighters G.O.A.T. after the Ali Foreman fight.

    JMO Cheers:good

the only mention of G.O.A.T when talking about Hamed should be the fact that he used to **** GOATS in Yemen
