What he did against Belcastro as a young novice and Medina with bronchitis was almost super-human, knocked out Molina four rounds quicker than Morales, knocked out Kelley and Johnson the top two Americans, knocked out Vasquez the WBA king and didn't take a punch against elite Bungu. Lest us not forget that all-time great Barrera paid Hamed the ultimate compliment by completely changing his style to sporadic counter-puncher after 50 fights of rythmic leading since he was 15, and that was actually a very close awkward fight with Barrera suffering a broken nose. Hamed was special. He found punching angles no other fighter in the world could find, was almost impossible to hit unless you had a deceptively long reach throwing constant lead rights (Johnson, Kelley) or totally threw him off tactically (Barrera), and generated more power from the elbow joints and shoulder gurdles than any fighter in history.
He is the reason I fell in love with boxing even though he as about as unconventional as they come. Such a showman "timber"
A partially wasted career if u ask me. was plenty succesful but could of been so much more. had the attributes all the greats tend 2 have, speed, reflexes, decent chin and huge power. but then when he came up against a master tacticion his prancin about lookin 4 the knockout while the mexican won the rounds with solid smart basic boxing really showed his flaws. hoped that loss was guna be a big reality check for how he went about fightin but it didnt, it just broke a fragile ego. shame, he is definatly one of my alltime favourites
his training for the Barrera fight consisted of getting a haircut.. he got to the point where he thought all he had to do was show up and he would win easily. he had bags of talent and power, but he was also a complete *******, I do think he get's under-rated these days though.
To me personally, he fits into the same category as Tyson. Lots of potential to be great, but threw it all away because they thought they knew better. MAB is an ATG but hes also a ****. I love the contradictions from some of the ******s here. "Hamed is overrated" "He got schooled by MAB" "MAB has wins over such good fighters as XYZ, Morales, Hamed"
Usually I don't like doing these sorts of responses, but... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_n5E7feJHw0[/ame]
Hamed was a good fighter, had heavy hands and was entertaining to watch. But, he was not an elite fighter. His fight with Barrera was not even close! He got schooled. As someone said the other day, Barrera wiped his ballbag with Hamed's legacy. Also, Hamed copied Eubank by leaping into the ring, ****in hype job of epic proportions.:good
The premiere featherweight in a weak era. Ironically it immediately preceded a great era. Hamed was very good. You could see in the build up documentary he'd lost the hunger for the sport. In a better era i'm not sure how well he'd have done but history shows he legitimately should have unified the wba, wbc, ibf, wbo and the ring belt. One day he'll make the hall I believe. I think he'll be remembered as a great fighter in a weak division.
