That was it, basically. He looked great beating up boxers who were British level, and who lacked his physical gifts - and he avoided the real top fighters, like Marquez, for years. Staying in the UK meant that he was never really tested until he met Barrera - the one true top level fighter he faced - and so he was never forced to develop character. A flat track bully is what he remained and - due to a grating, obnoxious personality (and particularly irritating trans-atlantic attempts at cool that he could never quite pull off) he is little loved in the sport.
A pre prime Barrera or the earlier less technical Barrera if you will would have had a harder time against Naz. People forget that Barrera turned pro at 15 years old. He had no amateur fights. He learned on the job. Barrera is a master technician. You don't just become a master technician in 5 years without amateur training. Obviously there are some exceptions, but that's rare. Barrera against Hamed was a full experience version of Barrera. And he was very, very well prepared for Naz.
Well Naz had the misfortune of being in the same weight class as 4 other ATGs all in their prime or relatively close to it. He could be the man in many other weak classes. But that division was as strong as any division any division has ever been.
Indeed. He was unlucky in that respect. He didn't know that at the time he ran off in to retirement though and had he had more heart/confidence then he would of tried to make the fab 4 a fist of fighters.
Not sure if they're even allowed to box, in point of fact - like so very many other things it is (I believe) considered haram.
True and he would have likely been exposed by the other 3 and against Pacquiao probably brutally destroyed. That said, it's rare to have just 1 fighter on that level in a given division. Let alone 4 of them.
Some muslims I know gamble, drink, smoke.. but most don't I suppose it all depends on the individual and how they approach their religion or how strict or moderate they are. I am not going to say what the right and wrongs are, I'm not a Muslim so what do I know.
Hamed beat a lot of world champions and quality fighter like Tom “Boom boom” Johnson and Kevin Kelley et al.
