Prizefighter format needs to be embraced on a higher level

    I'm a big fan of K1 and Prizefighter shows how raw and exciting a real fist fight can be. I hope it will slowly become embraced on a higher level. In K1, a loss doesn't make a fighter but unfortunately in boxing it does. Numerous K1 fighters lose in and out of the Grand Prix tournie but are still held in a very high regard. If (at least) top domestic fighters lost then it shouldn't be held against them.

    The next light heavyweight tournament looks a weak line up. Imagine a 168 tournie with Quigley, Smith, Dodson, DeGale, Grovers, Anderson etc At this stage I'm dreaming.

    Different formats show different qualities. Imagine Groves vs Anderson in prizefighter format. Groves would have to grow a pair much quicker or risk losing.

    The venue and prize money could greatly improve. They need to make it more of an event. At the moment they look like they are putting on alot of weak shows. I'd prefer 4 a year with the absolute best they can find for top money and much more marketing.

    In K1 (which is the highest level) they earn $400k prize money. Hopefully they could up Prizefighter to something like a £100k but that would mean they need more money at the gate. York Hall is a great and intimate venue but O2 or London Arena would be better!

    Brook, Hatton, O'Donnell, Jennings, Cox etc could be a decent night of weltweight fights.

    I think it would make a mockery of the sweet science to have it at that level. I'm all for it at the current level but any higher :nono

    the only thing i like about prizeffghter is that it can be a great spring board for a fighter that would/could have just spent a carrear toiling away at small hall shows

    it can be fun and entertaining but 70% of the time its an embaressment

    I really enjoyed the SFW but its been done to death. One a quarter would be best.

    I put out an idea about a smw domestic tourney and it had a mixed reaction. However I still believe that it could be the way forward. Unfortunately you need buy in from promotors, television and the bbobc.
    As the op was pointing out though, a loss shouldn't make or break you, it should be learnt from in all fairness, dependent of course on the actual manner of the defeat and stage of a respective fighters career.
    We need top boys and contenders to square off at championship distance. Find out who's on top. Maybe find a way with one of the alphabets to get a decent ranking?
    We need something to break some of the monotony of meaningless fights. Give guys something to aim for and raise their game.

    I'm suprised by the feedback. Too many old school boxing fans stuck in the past, not willing to evolve. I love 15 rounders but boxing can be more than it is at the moment.

    I mean you get purse bids and eliminators etc but I'm sure most people will agree that the current way of doing things doesn't always guarantee competitiveness domestically, and in reality also this does not benefit any fighter who has designs of fighting at a higher level.

    Prizefighter is like 20-20 cricket vs. test cricket, no purist would ever say they prefer that format.

    Boxing would not be able to support 2 separate formats like cricket does, especially with the 4 world title bodies, which confuses the mix even more.

    Also the boxers would not earn the money they do for a full fight vs. a shortened format fight.

    I just do not see any world class fighters offering to fight over the shortened format, as it does not make financial sense.

    In theory it would widen the appeal, but in practice it would not ever happen for anything other than it currently does.



    Unless...there was one governing body that could enforce two separate formats of the sport and there is not!
