The problem is perspective. If it was taken purely as a competition for novice fighters, which it is, then that'd be fine. But for some reason, winning is considered a step into championship class. Winning 3 3's against novive fighters shouldn't qualify you for a European title shot. But that, incredibly, is what was being mooted prior to the last one.
That was probably just a promotional ruse for Magee and Prizefighter. When a fighter actually gets a shot from winning Prizefighter, thats the time to worry.
Fair enough!! But had least Audley had mixed in that sort of company, he's poor but he was no novice.
The cruiserweight situation raised a few eyebrows, with potentially a 4x2 very low (bordering on not being allowed to have a licence) level journeyman being in with Herbie Hide :yikes In fairness the last two events have been much better, despite the lineups not being overwhelming.
Mixed and lost. Audley's last 4 fights prior to a European title shot: Coleman Barrett - 8 fight novice Danny Hughes - 7 fight novice Scott Belshaw - 12 fights, coming in off the back of a 2nd round tko to a 5 fight novice Martin Rogan - 10 fight novice who won prizefighter And he lost to Rogan.
Well thats why I said "mixed"!!! Still, 3-1 going into the title shot (which he won!). But, yep, it was an undeserved title shot.
That's not even Southern Area title form let alone European... Sky and matchroom should put their resources and nouse into building genuine contenders not this pound-stretcher popcorn boxing for dummies nonsense
The last Prizefighter I watched was when Audley won. Fair play to Matchroom for the format but even they must've known it wouldnt've went on forever. Some reinvention is required. I still don't know why they aint took the event to the U.S. Then you can have a UK v US thingy.
Anyway, the Super Middleweight one was the last of the season. Eddie Hearn has said he is looking at ways to rejuvenate the format for when it returns.
