Sykes and Lawton are up.

Sykes' confidence is drawn from being young, hungry and undefeated. Lawton's confidence is drawn from being 4-0 at this particular venue.

 

Round 1

Sykes backs Lawton up with sharp combos, leading with rights and following with hooks. Sykes is missing a good many punches as well as Lawton is just backpedaling too quickly to catch. Lawton lays on the ropes and Sykes waits on him. They pose a bit and Lawton decides on a change of terrain, coming off the ropes with a flush right hand. Sykes darts in and out on the taller man and lands short combos. Lawton is throwing very straight punches but they're slow and easily dodged. Sykes gets a hold on him and hits while holding. BIG right hand knocks Lawton to the ropes!! Sykes works the body. Shoeshines from Sykes. Lawton clinches on and is saved by the bell.

Round 2

Sykes bats Lawton into a corner and clips him on the chin with several right and left hand punches. Sykes is just a buzz-saw. Lawton tangles him up and gets out of the corner but can't get a rhythm going offensively and is no longer looking to try and escape, realizing he's the slower mover. Sykes is giving Lawton whiplash with nasty right hands. Sykes does slow down a little, allowing Lawton to circle and clinch a bit. Sykes goes to the body. Lawton is peppering in jabs between clinching. Sykes misses a hook and his punches have definitely slowed. Sykes launches a lead right but Lawton catches him and holds him still. Lawton's head is pushed back as Sykes palms him in the face with a jab.

Round 3

Lawton threatens with the jab. Sykes gives ground all the way to the corner but is making Lawton fall short. Sykes now starts mixing together head and body shots and defending well right in front of Lawton. A well-timed right hand from Lawton does land pretty hard. He is unable to follow up on it, missing a lumbering hook and getting the worst of each exchange before clinching. Sykes turns lefty and looses a few right jabs before getting back to a regular stance. Left jabs to the body from Sykes are the only activity from either man now. Lawton is pushed to the ropes and gets cracked with a big right hand, but stands up to it well and lands a jab on an un-expecting Sykes.

He still needs to get by the winner of Bell-Buckland. :nono

If that one ends by early KO, the winner will be fresher.

 

A fluke loss here could derail that opportunity. Being here is pretty bold on Gary's part.
