What are your thoughts on the new Prizefighter series? Does anyone think it will produce any new stars or is it just a chance to give guys a 2nd chance. I personally cant see any real champions coming out of this set up.
I think it is naff The first one was very good, but they are having the wrong level of fighter in there IMO. They want some guys that are like 9-0, or 12-1 rather than 20-8 or 13-3 - with the winner guaranteed a shot at the British title. Perhaps if they held two tournaments on the same night, the semis four rounds and the finals six?
The winner of the welterweight series a couple of weeks ago said that the guy he fought in the semi already had a broken nose before the fight started. i think its just a poor attempt at "The Contender" series which was on itv.
i really dont like it much to be honest. i think they need to up the prize money. so far none of the winners have capitalized on it much as none have fought again.
I think they need to quit trying to pass off these glorified exhibition bouts as fights on a professional boxing record.
I like the concept TBH, just not the quality of fighters. Imagine if this was done properly with prize money of say £10m. All the big names would want to be involved and it would be entertaining as ****!
I like the prizefighter competition and have enjoyed every show so far. I like the fact that guys with a second chance get an opportunity and some guys who are undefeated but going nowhere. Ok a few of the guys involved have been poor and could have been better but the competition would not attract guys with serious international ambitions. The fights that we have seen have been fights that would probably been made anyway but now the fighters have a little bit more riding on them. I think the competition needs a few more bangers involved instead of your survivors and non punching classy fighters though.
i hate everything about it... bami went into the final of the last one with a broken nose...lomax had stitches...both men half exhausted...what the fook does that fight proove...fook all i think... i know its good that these fighters get exposure and and 25 grand to the winner...but, fook, i don't like it at all... it belittles the sport....it's like a fairground strongman challenging anyone who wants to fight...and brings it into a porfessional scenario.. it takes a skillful sport and turns it into a slugfest... the contender format is sound...not this.. TFFP said - "I think they need to quit trying to pass off these glorified exhibition bouts as fights on a professional boxing record..." he's right !!
i dont like it, the first one was exciting for some reason and now its lost its appeal, barry hearn says boxing needs it to compete with MMA, thats bollox
Boxing needs something to compete with MMA, but not this. How about reducing the number of tinpot titles - people want to see more than good fighters, they want to see good fights. The BBBoC and the various TV networks should refuse to sanction bouts for inter-alphabetty and moody world titles like WBU/WBF etc and force a fighter's hand to go for the British and European titles rather than cherrypicking. The only other way would be to completely change the essence of the sport and have a 'world cup' type of event, with qualifiers, leading to seedings and then the tournament - a bit like world cup skiing/cycling or whatever but that would be horrendously long winded, but would eliminate ducking and mismatches. Couldn't see it working though at all, because how do you qualify for the elite level, do you have to win your national then Euro tourney etc etc. There would be more Euro/Afrobums getting in and the cream wouldn't always rise to the top.
I think the show is far better than watching Bami, Lomax and Wright on n undercard fighting an afrobum that nobody cares about over 4 rounds. Would anyone even know or care that Dave Ferguson, Sam Sexton or Martin Rogan existed without the show? At least now these guys will get a bit of publicity for thier fights over the next year or so. The programme was never about getting the next great prospect, it is just a good rival to watching total mismatches on undercards and the usual title match with a good fighter against a late replacement stand in who has driven 300 miles with the flu.
actually...you're points are valid...but, why not do like the contender format?...why not say one fight for each boxer a week??....i am surprised that purist fans, and boxing enthuasiasts would like to see two boxers in a final, one going in with a broken nose, one with stitches, their third fight in a couple of hours...:verysad....not for me brother.... i respect your opinion...thats just mine ^^
