Prizefighter

Yep I liked the original Contender format where a guy gets to fight and then rest but the show stunk to death with the 'tasks', shitty highlights of fights instead of showing us the full thing, over the top production and ******ed sound affects. I think the show would take a stack of money to make and you would need great tv deal to pull it off.


The prizefighter programme is not great but compared to what we usually get it is a step forward. Take a look at the last couple of shows on Friday night Sky. We saw a fat roided heavy pound a lard bucket, a skinny inexperienced kid beat an afro bum and several fights of no significance where usually the way fighter is just there to pick up a cheque. The only time I enjoy undercards is when I am in the live audience.

 

The Setanta undercards are usually much better.

 

How many domestic undercards have Setanta shown and the yanks are worse than us at having joke matches.

 

Double edged sword.

I think there is a bit of a shortage, but not as bad as you are making out. However, with that shortage (any for that matter) comes the need to protect them to get them to the higher level.

It is often said that we build records more than fighters - and it is more true than ever.

Why shouldn't two young prospects be matched?

If the fight is close, re-match them - no point doing what the likes of Olusegun, Bami, and Murray (it must be said) have done and fight chumps. I think Bami is pretty lousy, but the other two certainly have talent and it is time they were progressed.

 

I will admit that we do get a few good undercard fights either between prospects or two canny vets but when the situation is that bad that we get shown the fights Sky have given us in recent weeks the prizefighter seems a welcome break.


Unfortunetly we can not force these guys to fight, seeing guys like Ajose beat on low level opposition is an embarrassment, showing it on tv is even worse. I would also rather see Swaby swinging like a Lib Dem than watching Williams or McDermott or Sprott or Audley Gammer or Skelton in another 10 round bore.

 

All these guys suffered early losses and became top line fighters......
