Fans and journalists that diminish legitimate talent. Too many belts per division, should only be one. Ugly marketing and production of fights. Any others?
I think that the boxing media and commentators set the bar too low for fighters We have a lot of fighters that are just good fighters being referred to as great. They label regular in ring boxing maneuvers as brilliant and they ooh and awe about a knockout like a knockout is the only thing boxing is about. They send the wrong message to young fighters.
The contrived trash-talking and stupid press conference brawls. It's constant, and it's pathetic. Back in the day there was usually a pretense that we were to watch TWO GROWN MEN fight, and that they were PROFESSIONALS. Now it's just a bunch of f--king kids squealing at each other and acting like complete f--king d!cks.
The "0" mentality is terrible. I heard a casual say that Canelo was "done" that's just crazy. UFC fighters have losses and are still popular so I don't get it. Plus UFC has taken away a generation of younger fans from boxing. Boxing fans tend to be older on average. It's very possible in 30 years that boxing will be relegated to kickboxing level popularity. The way the sport is right now is TERRIBLE! Let's say Kovalev can't get the Ward rematch. He can't fight Adonis because of the network disputes. So who does that leave? Beterbiev? Great fight but then? The ducking and the politics. Spence can't fight Bradley. Or Brook decides to jump up 2 weight classes, gets his face broken, while retaining the title as Spence loses time and momentum. All these things lead to frustration. Can't see myself following the sport this intensely for very long.
Too many belts, too many divisions, the alphabet organizations .... .... we knew that was in danger of destroying the sport 30 years ago, and now it's far far worse.
Fans think like they are in boxers shoes, not their own. oh I give him a pass because I understand, I would do it like that for myself too. people forget that there are many entities in boxing and their motivations are different. they can't see that if one group is heavily supported to the point all their moves are OK then the other groups will suffer. I'm talking in general terms as well, boxers fans promoters managers networks. Boxers making great money for **** fights, safety first, a side b side, or whatever else boxers are doing that is empowering is disrupting boxing as a whole. it hinders the other entities of boxing from doing their roles. Boxers are ****ing winning right now. no one is checking them. if anyone does, they get branded heartless or greedy or accused of some other dumb **** . Max Kellerman said it best when he said Mayweather career blueprint is what you want for your son. but as an unbiased fan, that shouldn't be the ideal.
The mentality that you can't have a loss is probably number 1. Or at least the number one culprit of the biggest problem, which is so few top fighters face each other. That's caused by bad fans etc, as the op said
Mayweather's so-called blueprint is not exclusively mandated for boxing. If a person interpreted it the right way, they will find out that it can be applied to many walks in life.
-A fighter losses his 0 = bum -Guys like Andre Berto getting millions (i like Berto by the way, but c'mon) -Awful undercards -No one is willing to fight the best -If someone fights the best and losses, he gets roasted by the media and fans -Calling every close fight a robbery -Prospects wasting to much time "building" their careers -Fighters getting millions by fighting no ones -Lack of desire in and out of the ring -Lack of good trainers I listed reason that are fault of the fans, the boxers and the managers and promoters.
it has already become all about money so that corruption is rampant and blatant then just swept under the rug. ppv has become the defining factor of a star boxer even though it's very obvious that it's all business strategy. love of money is destroying the sport with too many protected fighters and too many useless belts used just for acquiring sanctioning fees.
Too many "Boxing Expert/Fans" who are wannabe "Judges" and thinks that they know better than the real professional judges judging the fight from their TV or even Internet. That's the real boxing problem at the moment - The CRY BABIES of Boxing
