A 17-18 year old boy will be chosen to represent his country, and may possibly be the best they have to offer because they have earned the right to be there. They have excelled as an amateur. The 30 year old professional will have had years to perfect his craft in a professional ring. He will have been hit harder, developed his game further, and will not be fazed by an amateurs in/out point scoring with very little power. How would you suggest the professionals qualify for the Olympics? In an amateur ring, or a professional ring? What would the rules be? Would they have to have a limited ranking as a professional? What would be the maximum bouts said professional could have to attempt to qualify for the Olympics? That's not even half the questions, and that's not even taking health and safety in to consideration, or age restrictions, etc. Far too complicated and dangerous.
Actually, i think you are right, they would have competed for prize money. When did i say anything about olympics inventing sporting. When the modern olympics started it was amateur though.
maybe limit it to prospects who haven't fought for a title yet? but definitely no well established pros
Based on what? The WBC or IBF rankings? The Ring (bunch of paid writers sitting around a table)? It would have to be all or nothing.
There've been pros in the Olympics as far back as I can remember. When a boxers had two-three hundred, or more, amateur bouts against the best boxers in the world (who subsequently became pro world champions) -- as in Cuba and Eastern Europe -- they're pros without the label or the money.
To put it in perspective, the original Olympics (both in ancient Greece & the reincarnation in "modern" times) were never specifically about amateurs, only about the best in the world competing. The big problem with pro boxers is as has already been discussed: The styles & rules are very different. I don't see how a pro could adapt. I also don't see why a pro would want to bother.
I may be wrong, but I think only teams sports such as soccer, basket, etc. allows professional. Skating, boxing and about any other sports are for amateurs only.
less than 15 fights, nothing above national level championships? ie: a british rep can't win above domestic level
Amateur fighter going to be managed by Bob Arum and Oscar dela Hoya? or Professional boxers beating the **** outta amateurs? or professional fighters with already ATG status or top p4p rankings getting humiliatingly being beaten or lost due to a corrupt olympic judging. it all can come true ya know...
It would ruin amateur boxing, what would be the point of sticking around at all if you can't even get a shot at the olympics because your getting your **** kicked in by Floyd Mayweather Jr. while he calls you a *****.
