When people compare Louis and Ali for the top spot, I never see their late losses coming into the discussion. Never seen those made a factor.

Not to mention his light middle title was a fraudulent belt won against a completely unaccomplished jr middle who was made to weight in at 150.

Now you're sounding a bit General.

Yes, I don't like catch weights either, but Margarito had won the WBO belt at 154 so he was hardly "completely unaccomplished" at the weight, and catch weight or not he still must have had at least 20 lbs in the ring on Pac plus huge advantages in height and reach. He didn't seem overly drained either since he kept coming for 12 rds despite taking a brutal beating.

There was a catch weight, Margarito wasn't a great belt holder, but it was still a great achievement for a former flyweight to win the belt like that. Those things are possibly to combine.

Margarito never was a 154 champion. Pacquiao was awarded a vacant belt in a catchweight fight. Margarito was a tough enough opponent for him, but the belt was more ficticious than one he just won against Mattyhsse. I do not recognize him as a former 154 champ.

No one's mentioned Freddie Steele? Off the top of my head he had around a hundred victories, only a handful of losses (A few straight up bad luck) with a great KO ratio.

Did Sugar Ray Robinson only lose one of his first 135 fights?

Salvador Sanchez 44-1-1 by his 23rd birthday with 4-0 with 4 knockouts against future hall of famers under the age of 30...also cleaned out the WBC throne beating the former, current, and future WBC champions

Archie Moore from 1950-1955 when he challenged for the world heavyweight title went 40-1 with a 11-1 record against hall of famers under the age of 30.

True, on the other hand Ali makes up the ground on Louis and possibly over takes him is from his post prime wins. Had Ali fought them 3 years he might not have had enough left to stay as relevant for as long as he did. Louis lost years of activity from the 2nd world and didn't have the oppurtunity to fight any outstanding emerging contenders and credible opponents. They were both unfortunate in that sense.
