Alot of people have been discussing whether boxing is suffering from MMA's success but after one of the most succesful years in boxing history, this may not be the case. We have continued to see the WWE diminish and diminish, PPV's are down and people are losing interest.

Has the WWE fanbase switched over to MMA?
Or has the 'extremity' of pro wrestling just started to look quite tame and ridiculous now you can see people fighting for real in a cage meaning the old fanbase has lost its interest in the once risque and 'extreme' world of WWE?

Is Pro Wrestling suffering from the success and rise of MMA?

well it was a pretty stupid comment.

there are probably 5 morons in the entire earth who still think pro-wrestling is real so seeing an mma match and thinking, "damn, pro wrestling must be fake" is pretty stupid. if you look closely, you'll see that the wwe generates much income from kids. and not many kids watch mma.

wwe's sales are diminishing because of many factors. injury its top stars is one. cena, taker, hbk, reyrey, trips, edge, batista, lashley and many others have been injured while they were part of a major storyline. benoit is also another case of why wwe is losing viewers.

apples and oranges, iron duke. it does not mean that because the apples are selling, that it was the oranges fault

I think a big fanbase of wrestling is kids, true, but also a alot of teenagers and alot of twenty-somethings love wrestling too.
I can definitley see a cross over in fanbase, of course pro-wrestling is fake, and thats 1 of my points, do you think that the fanbase that used to watch wrestling for its extremity and violence (albeit fake) has now tuned over to watch the 'real deal'?
I think WWE has to share a part of the blame because of the crappy talent and now lame storylines but the rise of MMA might be a contributing factor in the decline of pro-wrestling.

And I don't think MMA is 'picking' on pro-wrestling no more than it was 'picking' on boxing, its not, its just existing and happens to be in competition.

let's put it this way. ufc hurts ppv sales of wwe because people would rather see a ufc ppv than a wwe ppv where the matches are sometimes even crappier that matches on raw.

but as a whole. fans do not turn their backs on wwe, meaning they'll never watch it anymore, to watch the ufc. agreed?

Well......I was a big wrestling fan and when I discovered MMA, I just thought to my self how absurd it was that I was watching all this fake stuff when the sort things are actually happening for real.

I have certainly lost alot of interest due to the arrival of MMA, maybe there are alot of people like me.

I liked wrestling as a kid watcing the Hulkster, ultimate warrior, randy Savage etc. but i grew out of it like most people should.....I still find it amazing it is as big as it is....people going crazy and cheering for a totally staged event:nut ...you have to wonder about the people who still take wresting seriously:huh

I always viewed pro-wrestling as a soap opera for men.

The WWE fanbase is going nowhere. The reason why the PPV numbers are falling is because of the qualityof the bouts, the lack of good wrestling, and the poor mike skills of the guys that Vince keeps pushing into the limelight. Guys like "the Rock" and the "rattlesnake" attracted hardcore and arm chair fans. Guys like Batista cant even invent there own style let alone make a semi decent presentation of himself in the ring. His finisher is shite and his wrestling is nothing short of pathetic. His not even a wrestler. His a bodybuilder who made life as a doorman and got the cut in the WWE because of his size and work ethic.

Pro wrestling dwindling numbers has nothing to do whatsoever with the rise of MMA though. Vince`s product is simply old, stale and for want of a better word ****.Right now the WWE is at its lowest point EVER! They`ve had a horrible year. There stars are getting old or retiring.Big names have left to join TNA. They have a slew of guys non active because of steroid abuse, big name wrestlers are dying because of drug abuse like Benoit and Eddie, OVW isnt producing anything, and the current roster is thin and extremely weak on the ground. The WWE has had a bad year. But Vince is a GREAT businessman. He`ll be back.

I sincerely doubt MMA can capitalise on this. There two entirely diffrent products with vastly differing fan bases.

Iv never understood this often repeated line. EVERYONE THAT WATCHES IT KNOWS IT ISNT REAL.Its a bit like going to a theatre and watching Julius Ceasar dying and then grandly proclaiming "My god its real i saw them in the flesh. THEY KILLED HIM!"

Think of wrestling like a Nintendo DS. Hardcore gamers couldnt give a crap about it.But in the right hands its far more popular than any of its competition. So popular infact it doesnt even have a predecessor - much like Professional wrestling.
