The WSB bouts were still considered amateur fights. Bigger gloves no vests or head gear Etc. You drive a hard bargain with your assessment of Russell. He was a top featherweight ranked #1 so Loma dominating that caliber of opponent in his 3rd fight was a great win. Frampton, Quigg, Santa Cruz and Valdez ducked Loma. Those were guys who had the opportunity to fight Loma but he was viewed as too much risk and not enough reward. None of the featherweights wanted to give Loma a chance to take their titles or earn a win off their names at that time and still don’t mention his name. Walters didn’t fight for 11 months before Loma....no different than Crawford fighting Gamboa who was in active for a full year prior to their bout at 135 which was 2 weight classes higher than Gambao’s division which was 126. Yet that win for Bud is considered his best win. Rigo subsequently was deemed old, undersized and inactive by fans who claimed Rigo was going to beat, expose and break Loma’s jaw. Rigo has a chance to fight Loma 3 years earlier at 126 but Rigo rejected the fight. If you say Loma only has two good wins over then Crawford only has one decent win over at featherweight who was inactive for a full year who moved up to lightweight in Gamboa. That’s of course not true in my opinion. Both Bud and Loma have very good and great wins in their respective careers but you seem to have a much stricter criteria of what is a quality win vs what’s a good win. Salido was offered the rematch in 2016 so 1 1/2 years later. Shane beat DLH and received less than Oscar in the rematch. Salido was offered a career high payday for the rematch and Loma was only going to make $825k. The A side always gets the lions share. It’s just business. Davis isn’t a novice. He was a world champion and had twice as many fights as Loma. He also had a big name and was known as a KO artist so it made sense Loma wanted a high profile fight against Tank who is a popular boxer. Berchelt didn’t want the fight based on his actions. He could have called out Loma like he was prior to the Rigo fight....Loma didn’t take any punishment and could have fought Berchelt when Mijares and Malaga fell through but he didn’t even mention Loma’s name? It was a viable fight but Linares at 135 called him out instead of Berchelt and is seen as a bigger threat and a higher profile fight. Mayweather and Manny moved up many weight classes but to get to 147 and 154 it took them well over a decade. Loma has been a pro 4.5 years and is already a 2 division world champion and looking at his 3rd division because the super featherweight champions aren’t eager to fight him. Berchelt might me now, but his timing is suspect. There are negotiations with Linares at the moment. I get it....Loma is held to a higher expectation than most because he’s deemed a special talent. But he’s not taking the easy road to beef up a record with a lot of wins against easy opponents. He taking on tough competition and looking for history making fights to earn his accolades. Some fans just want to pick apart his accomplishments and hope that he fails. And he could....but if he does it’s because he’s always pushing the envelope and challenging himself because he believes he can be one of the best
There are points I couldmake here. But the only think that I really want to say is that Gamboa in the fight previous to Crawford was 134 1/2 against a very good, undefeated Darleys Perez and won. After the Crawford fight, Gamboa kept fighting north of 130...That means he probably couldn't make the weight, that's why he moved up.
I consider Gamboa a great win for Bud. He was undefeated and a gold medalist. He did have a fight against Perez who was a very good fighter so Gamboa at that time was a top guy who Bud beat and dominated for the most part. I just disagree with some of the expectations people have for Loma. He’s not great yet, but he’s early on in his career and has done some pretty remarkable things in my opinion. I believe he will continue to make meaningful fights but don’t think he will ever earn the credit he deserves by some of the fans who seem to have unrealistic expectations. Not everyone can be a Floyd or a Pacquaio but it doesn’t mean he’s not able to produce a great legacy for himself when he hangs up the gloves
