found this on another site :- "I could probably give Jones a tough fight, probably the best fight he's ever had," said Calzaghe. "But I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown jewels I wouldn't want to risk it." http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/sport...ls/I+am+the+best,+says+honest+Joe+/article.do hopefully this little gem will now put an end to people who say calzaghe didnt avoid prime fighters... !:hi: he didnt want to risk it... what a 'legend Joe is' ..... NOT
And it was obvious he wasn't going to get paid the "crown jewels" so there you have it. Had a lot of discussions with others before and they all seemed to twist it to Jones ducking Calzaghe, believe it or not.
And all the while none of the Calzaghe supporters mention the big old white elephant from Youngstown in the room when they talk ducking.
NO WAY did Jones duck him. No way. But this is also true. Calzaghe was making too much money at home to risk fighting Jones for peanuts. He's just being candid. The exposure came too late for Calzaghe to get a crack at a decent Roy Jones Junior.
Listen ...Calzaghe wasnt even regarded a credible champion at this time... he was milking his title at home...he was a nobody until 2005(Lacy) He fell off the radar after his Eubank win...thats his fault...he never had the ambition to do what Hatton did....he calculated his risk....and it has created a great illusion
"But I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown jewels I wouldn't want to risk it." :rofl
Nobody even knew who Joe was back, then. It's not until he fought Lacy did people start to give a fug.
Well don't all boxers expect more money if they're fighting tougher opponents? Calzaghe just has the balls to admit it, and it doesn't ever mean that Jones offerd Calzaghe a fight and he turbned it down. I think it Jones had offerd to fight Calzaghe in 2000 he would have taken it. It would probably have been tripled then doubled his best pay day to that date.
