I love the way Calzaghe haters are willing to spend their time tralling through the internet trying to dig up dirt. They probably know more about Calzaghe than the boxers their into!
As for the article all it say's is Calzaghe isn't willing to move up a weight class and fight Jones for peanut's- what a revelation.

    Without any doubt at all.:deal

    ------------------------------

Completely unrelated to the thread topic (and just for those that have never watched it and don't have a better copy in their collection), the following website has the first Hopkins/Mercado fight from late '94 (this was the fight held at elevation in Ecuador in which Hop goes down in the 5th and the 7th (weren't much really if you've never seen them)). It worked/plays but I couldn't get it to embed here.

Joe apparently has a fear of flying. I remember him on the Tyson Nielsen bill in Scandanavia. Dont ask me "how" he got there but he did. As soon as he was able to make the Jones flight that fear of flying went because a career pay day was at stake.

Joe was in this sport for one simple reason to make money. He ditched Warren so he could make a career pay day in a fight that was horribly promoted and a failure at the gate. Joe has no economic savvy and his entire career was shrewdly promoted with the usual risk/reward ratio thats common for SN fighters. There was a time when he used to bad mouth Hatton because he was envious Ricky made half a mil a time at the M.E.N defending the WBU.

Meanwhile Joe was doing the same at home defending the WBO. No one knew who he was and he sat on that belt for nearly 10 years before he faced Lacy in a fight that eventually gave him world recognition. A fight Joe was happy to pull out of despite the 1 million down payment and Warren had to convince him to lace them up despite a hand injury.

Much like Sven Ottke Joe wasnt interested because he was making easy money. All of a sudden when the chips added up which was way past the fight even being important anymore Joe reneged on his words and said Jones wasnt shot because a bumper pay day was at stake..

at the end of the day .....Joe is a great fighter...but not a Legend (probaly only to his fans)

no one in general rate him as high as Jones and Hopkins anyway...but there is no shame in that..

hes an excellent fighter...but a tier behind those 2.

If there was a poll ...if people rated Clazaghe higher than Jones/Hopkins only 10/15% would vote in Joes favour....thats should say it all

    where did you read that?

in an J R Tolken novel? rofl

Jones was a champion in 1992...Joe only turned pro....

Jones was the consensus P4P nr:1 for 10 years...

    different leagues....

Danny Williams beat Tyson....but we dont compare them . Same should be with Joe...

I think a better comparison to Joes level would be a Tarver/Glenn Johnson Steve Collins..

lets not compare him to great fighter...or we will find to many holes in his resume.

its been mentioned on various old threads and eubank has obviously mentioned it himself

as for comparing resumes JCs best wins are not against smaller boxers where hopkins couldnt be hurt or outboxed against blown up welters

thats not proof that Calzaghe ducked Jones at all.

wtf are people smoking on ESB. All he said was that he would have to get a big payday to fight Roy Jones. Makes sense to me. These guys aren't out there fighting for nothing.

here lies the problem when a fighter fights past his best years when he had no need to.

An inferior boxer/human specimen like Calzaghe gets compared prime for prime.

Calzaghe is not as good as Jones or hopkins in their prime years but one thing for sure.

Hes far SMARTER than these 2. Hes sneaked out of the back door....stating he has nothign to prove. those 2 could of said that along time ago...but opted to fight and diminish their records in the process losing to guys like Calzaghe.

Always the problem when the great fight past their best.

Calzaghe recently said he wouldnt fight again becaus ehe didnt want to lose his unbeaten record.....I wish those 2 retired earlier...Hopkins after Tarver jones after Tarver/Ruiz....

there wouldnt even be a comparision then.

why the **** r we talking about this Zlapmaster? he's about as boring as watching paint dry. im glad he's retired. lets stop mentioning his name, in 2 years time no one would even remember who he is. Zlappy won't even make the top ten all time british great. he's a fraud.

in no particular order better pound4pound brit fighters.

No what he is saying is that he would have lost, and needed to be paid a great deal to do so...

I have been telling Jones haters for years that Calzaghe turned down an offer to fight Jones back in 99, in which Warren told HBO that the offer was peanuts and Joe dont fight for peanuts..

But Joe found the balls to fight Jones Ten years and several loses later..Man that really shows what kind of stuff Joe was made of.

    Nothing new here, Cityofgod.

I posted that quote (paraphrased) about two years ago.

Prime Roy would have prevailed over any version of Joe. But it would have been Roy's toughest fight, and not one Roy was over anxious to get into.

There was no $$$ incentive at the time as Joe had little profile.
