The link doesn't work, whether you click it or copy and paste it with the words put in for the stars, but, anyway, Haye divided in and Barrett caught him with a left hook to the side of the head. That was no slip. It was a knockdown. Not much of a punch and it didn't hurt Haye, but it did put him down, because he was diving forward like that.

And that was the smallest ring I've ever seen! Was it even of the minimum legal size?

The referee was a hometown disgrace too...stole 2 points from Barrett for the KD that wasn't scored and penalised him with 1 point for hitting once Haye was on his arse, but didn't penalise Haye for doing the same on at least one occasion.

Reminds me of the referee in the Bika v. Manfredo fight...

    What a disgrace!:-( :-( :-(

At best we've got another Mickey Vann on our hands with this guy; at worst, he's the next Terry O'Connor...:verysad :verysad :verysad

What, you don't know the ref Richard Davies...? Really?
He's only been around for about, oh, five centuries.

Barrett was naughty with the punch but the point deduction may have been a bit quick. On the other hand, what the **** were points ever going to matter in this one?

First time I saw him was/was aware of him was during the Sosnowski fight. I remember he gave the Pole a count when he really shouldn't have, thereby stealing 2 points of him (if I remember right). Why? Has he done some hachet jobs that he is well known for?

About the deduction for the punch when Haye was down...it was one of those punches that was coming anyway; it wasn't planned as such, like such punches sometimes are...I have nothing against the deduction, but then he should have deducted a point for Haye hitting Barrett too, when he was on the ground....

Anyway, as you say, in this fight the ref wouldn't have mattered.

From our point of view, we should be happy Haye is still very fast and sharp, and that his power has carried up very well.

    Go, David!:happy

    Hi Decebel
The last thing Richie Davies is is a hometown disgrace! I have known Richie since 2002 when I first worked with him and have always found him to be a top ref and of impeccable morals in boxing. I will be downloading the full fight tomorrow but from what I saw on here, the Barrett point deduction was certainly justified as the shot was well and truly aimed after David hit the canvas, you can see Barrett line him up. Also as for the knockdown from on here it looks like Haye's feet have already gone or are going from under him when the Barrett shot is launched, on here it looks like the shot just goes straight over the top of his head but will have a better look once I have downloaded the entire fight.
I have been very fortunate to work with many of the Top refs in the world and many of England's best and Richie is right at the top of the list IMO. Is he perfect? No - his assertation that he is the Tom Cruise of referees is highly deluded at best and the fact that he believes that he is funnier than me is even worse, but he certainly doesn't deserve sledging (unless I'm doing it! :hey :hey :hey

Fair enough; I might have jumped the gun; I only judged him on his last two fights - Sosnowki and Haye, and he seemed to me to give an unwarranted, significant advantage to the local fighter in both fights. If he makes a habit of that, he is from the Terry O'Connor school of boxing. If not, he's just had two bad fights...anyway...I'll take your word for it!:good

About the Haye KD...it was a KD...Haye's feet are not already gone when he moves towards Barrett and Barrett throws a left hook that catches his forhead. You can see David's head pushed back a bit if you're careful. Slip? No way. But the punch didn't have power on it and it didn't hurt David at all. Legit knockdown...legs were not tangled either. Anyway...forget the KD...it's not that important.

Let's look at the point deduction. I rewatched it and Barrett did indeed throw the punch on purpose, not as I said the first time around - instinctively. So...it was warranted.

But with a minute to go in round 3, after Barrett was KD'ed, Haye takes a massive swing at him and just misses him. Why did the ref not even warn Haye for attempting to hit an opponent whilst down? Haye threw that big right hayemaker on purpose, and barely missed him!

    See?;)

From memory last night he did warn him when he threw the shots while Barrett was on the floor.

Unfortunately he did not; he just stopped David from taking further swings at him and sent him to the neutral corner.

Also...why did he let Barrett and Haye rabbit punch the hell out of each other, with only one warning or two...?:huh They were at it like rabbits, in the clinch...

    Hi Decebel
I have only seen bits of it so far but the shots Haye threw when Barrett was down did not connect - it was fuzzy footage so I will qualify my opinions tommorrow once I have a full good copy of the fight.
If things don't connect then they warrant a warning which Haye got, if they connect then it warrants a point deduction which Barrett got.
As for the knockdown again I will qualify again tommorrow but to me it looks a slip and was also immediately called a slip on the Tellybox.
Richie might be as funny as a fart in an elevator and have a head like a dropped meat pie but he would never, never knowingly give any fighter an advantage

Quite often (and I am not saying this is the case) if both fighters are doing something illegal, a ref will give cautions in running and you won't always be able to pick up everything on the ref's mike - the sound quality sounded terrible IMO and he may well have just done that - ie told both boys to knock it off. Not saying this is gospel; just a theory.

If both guys are doing stupid **** and no-one's getting an advantage a good ref does not want to be pulling the fight up for every infraction made. We'd all be there all ****ing night otherwise! That's why cautions in running work well but they can sometimes pass by the fan at the venue or sometimes watching at home. You'ld think Setanta could spring for a decent mike! :huh
