Proof that being muscular/bigger doesn't fit into the equation...

I keep seeing a certain poster (we all know who this is) who manages to cite muscularity and size into the equation when comparing abilities or matchups, etc...

It makes me think of Trinidad vs Joppy every time. I remember having this fight at my house and a house full of non-boxing fans and occasional watchers of boxing.

Before the fight, everyone but me and a buddy of mine was shaking their head in refusal to think that Trinidad, with his not-nearly-as-flattering-physique would have a chance against Joppy, who looks very muscular and athletic.

We all know how that turned out for Joppy and how much being able to bench press more that Trinidad (presumably) and all that extra muscle actually helped him...

There are probably countless examples of this same thing-

I'd like to hear some from you experts here in Classic, and maybe include examples of fights where physique isn't necessarily the hang-up, but something overwhelming to the amateur eye like punching power, like Quarry vs Shavers for example, is rendered null and void because of other factors like overall ability/skill, experience, etc...

Trinidad is a good example. He had a large base though where a lot of his power came from, but he generated his power, specifically with his lefthook, with very good technique.

    Hell, Baer vs Carnera!

Any casual observer would say that goof-ball Baer is gonna get himself killed; Carnera's bigger, stronger, WAY more muscular...

It didn't go his way, though.

Tito is a good example. But i think the obvious 2 are Ray Robinson and Joe Louis. Both are possibly the hardest punchers p4p and both had lean bodies without being heavily muscled.

If you have good punching technique, you're gonna crack people even when you're exhausted in a fight. For those who tense up, and like to throw with muscle, you lose speed and it takes more energy.

    Calzaghe-Lacy.

Manny picked Lacy to beat Calzaghe just based on Lacy's physical appearance.
