Just because boxrecs formula is inadequate doesnt mean that there isnt a better one for ranking fighters, it will never be perfect or completely objective but at least a calculation doesnt have the politics that the sanctioning bodies do.

Other sports with individual competitors like golf, tennis & snooker have decent rankings but the top players compete with each other far more often, which produces more results & an average of which produces more accurate reflection of who is the best.

Wait, hold on, the sanctioning bodies have agendas? :bart

Seriously tho, this does prove their system doesn't work. A quick look at their rankings will confirm it. Bute #1 at 168, Broner #1 at SFW.

But I get what your saying. As of today, there isn't a better way of ranking fighters. I think they just place too much emphasis on fighters to a guy who just lost. I mean Kessler lost to Ward, but that doesn't make him a bad fighter. He goes on to beat Froch and takes all his points. Silly to me

Bute is a perfect example of how it doesnt work.

Too much emphasis on a loss & too narrow a way of calculating a performance & relative rankings.

When I finally win the lottery I will sit down with Carol Vorderman & sort out a better way:bbb

'Money' May down at number 9! Can't believe this. There is no blueprint on how to beat Floyd Mayweather...Kid Gavilan has 30 losses! And everybody knows he decided to die rather than fight 'Chop Chop' Corley.

You need a group of good honest people to decide the rankings based on context - what is happening in boxing, who is beating who, what is the significance etc This is all the MMA orgs do but because they often keep fights in house, they don't lose either way. Boxing orgs want money from the promoter, want champs of certain nationalities, bigger sanctioning fees etc

Mayweather probably isn't one of the top 9 welters of the past 30 years, never mind of all time.

Stick him at 130lbs where he belongs!

Bute at #1 is laughable, though he's the only one other than Ward that is unbeaten..... and has beaten a few people either unbeaten themselves, or on long winning runs. JP Mendy's first round win against Bika being a prime example ;)

Yes, that would be great because everyone who slags them off can't come up with anything better (without introducing subjectivity).
