As a last resort, when your covering up and getting hammered, clinching is a better option that taking continued punishment

Get your arms under his/her armpits that way they can't punch you (over the top and wraped around works too). Rest your head on the opponents shoulder; lean your weight on them, to drain thier energy.

The clinch is best performed after every single jab, sometimes instead of a jab. You should aim for about 30 or so clinches per round. I have watched many John Ruiz fights. I know all about proper clinching technique. When done properly, the clinch is unbeatable.

The clinch is a preemptive form of blocking and is done when there isn't enough room to punch. Ideally what you try to do is control your opponent's elbows. Grab them from in front or behind, that will make it nearly impossible for him to hit you with a hook or an uppercut. If all you do is grab on, you won't be able to control him and you will likely find your chin resting on his shoulder. If he is clever he will shoulder butt you to get you off, then hit you with a hook.
