That sure is something. What about the olympics only being for quote 'amateur' sportspeople? I thought that's what the rule was.

That idea went out of window years ago. Footballers, golfers, tennis players etc not to mention that top class athletics hasn't been amateur for donkies years.

    This is bad.

Young prospects will find it tougher coming up as the olympics is often the patform of there exposure now some established world champion can fight instead and then nobody hears about this kid and he ends up a wasted talent

It sounds like quite a good idea. Sort of like a boxing world cup.
Does it mean that the likes of Degale will be able to enter if they opt in to the AIBA thing.?
Didnt really read through propperly as its late and im a bit tired.
It was all a bit much to take in at this hour.

From a British point of view, brilliant, but if you are a nation with little money to throw at the sport, this sucks.

All the medals will be won by Brits, Americans and Germans, and there may also be some potentially dangerous mismatches.

    no...from the article;

"But this does not mean that existing pros such as Amir Khan and James DeGale, both previous Olympic medallists, can go for gold again or that David Haye can try for a medal in London. The move is not retrospective and initially will be restricted to those taking part in the world championships. But many in the sport believe this is a forerunner to full-scale professionalism whereby any young boxer who turns pro can compete in the Games."

so you will have to be currently amateur and competing in the world championships in milan in August to qualify, and then take part in the world series of boxing on turning pro.

seems to be just a way of allowing amateur boxers to turn pro earlier without losing their chance of competing in the olympics.

  11. Will they keep the amatuer style fighting becauase I couldn't see boxers doing 4 12 rounders in 2 weeks

my special reading powers are proving useful today ;)

    from the article...

"The Independent on Sunday has seen a copy of a document drawn up by the AIBA formalising the tournament in which boxers will be paid purse money and box over five rounds without vests or headguards under a 10-points a round professional scoring system."

Isn't this just amateur boxing with professional rules:?

I mean the purses are hardly going to be massive are they? Who's going to put up the prize money?

I think this is a great idea. All the ducking that goes on in professional boxing would go out the window if it was in the Olympics.
