Pros Upset In Olympic Qualifications

People thinking it's a cakewalk for pros in this are and always have been in for a rude awakening.

Ever wonder why so many top amateurs are fast tracked to titles these days? They're good. And, not all of those top guys go pro. Hubris here will result in the pros getting their asses kicked.

 

A few of us here have been saying ALL ALONG that pros and amateurs are different constructs and it's entirely disrespectful to assume pros are going to humiliate amateurs.

Ruenroeng who was at the elite level as a pro just got KTFO.

Must admit. This has really shocked me.

 

Not surprising. Ruenroeng is getting old and these young kids are very talented. Neither of these guys are truly elite anyway, they were just former title holders.

These amateurs on the other hand are the stars of tomorrow. Amateur or pro, a good fighter is a good fighter.

 

What's nice about including these pros is you get to see what division they'd actually be in if the pros returned to same-day weigh-ins.

Ndam, for example, is a middleweight contender. But he's fighting at 178 (light heavy limit for amateurs) in these tournaments, when he has to keep weighing in before the bouts.

It's always bothered me when people started threads asking how Golovkin would do against Hagler, for example. When Hagler weighed in the day of the fight often around 157. And Golovkin weighs about as much as Archie Moore and Michael Spinks did for their light heavy fights.

 

Ruenroeng was not a mere titleholder. He was at the very top level, with very good wins.

Why are people ignoring the fact that ndam is fighting 2 weights above his weight class, and ruerong is fighting like 6 weight classes above his usual weight?

 

Theres no such thing as amateurs anymore.

Theres regular pros, and theres AIBA pros.

No. Cameroon already had a middleweight qualified and there is no super middle in the olympics. So N'Dam had to go for 81 kg.
