True. This is, yet again, where Calzaghe failed miserably. I still maintain that the fight with Pavlik was all done and dusted should he of beaten Hopkins. But Hopkins put an end to that and when that happened, Calzaghe should of been on the phone for a rematch. Not only that, but it should of been Dawson that Calzaghe was fighting that November instead of Jones.

Either way, the man will at some stage in the future, be majorly pissed off that he didnt try to crack America a lot earlier in his career.

That just means that the fight was hard to score. Your point is kind of redundant seeing as the judges scored it for Calzaghe and a greater number of fans scored it for JC.

Now, seeing as BHOP would annihilate the middleweight champ mere months later, how is it not a good win? Is Taylors wins over Hopkins not good?

Will he though, really? He's got his money and his fame.

He also seems to follow the beat of his own drummer. I don't see him hanging on to the past like Hagler and telling all his grandchildren that he deserved a 10-7 round in the Hopkins fight for his Dirty Dancing impression.

He just wanted the name on his record. Now that he got it, it's like, nah nah, you are not taking mine. :-(

I think it will play on his mind. His last 2 fights gave him a taste of the big scene in the states. Yeah he's a nice little record that most people would kill to have. But it won't stand up in the long run. The thought of a 25 year old green fighter stopping his arguably best win will annoy him. Froch going to America in his first defense to fight a huge profile fighter like Taylor, will annoy him. Calzaghe could of easily made fights with the likes of Brewer/Mitchell/Sheika in the states to enhance his standing over there. Had he of actually cornered Ottker into a unification bout back in 2001/2002 then Hopkins would of been more likely to take the fight with him.

Yes, he's made his money and has his 0 and health intact, but I firmly believe he'll have huge regrets about his choices.

I never saw the fight, but he lost on cuts? Not exactly the worst way to go, it leaves the door wide open for exuses

He lost by being comletely outclassed and bamboozled by a much faster, accurate and classier fighter. He got cut by a headbutt or 2 and the fight was stopped by that, but he was on his way to a near shutout defeat by a prospect.

I think it was fairly obvious that the lax refereeing was a reaction by the Americans to the Froch-Dirrell fight, payback being "a *****" and all that. Two wrongs don't make a right however.

I like how these news articles after the fight mention (a couple of) the headbutts, but then just quote Andre Ward proclaiming that he's "not a dirty fighter" and close the book on that question without any comment. I know he says he's the Son Of God and all that, but taking his word as Gospel is overkill.

I disagree with your main assessment here.

I said Ward would win before the fight and I said that when he does, it will not diminish my views on Calzaghe.

    1. Ward-Kessler had nothing to do with Calzaghe
    2. I think Ward is a star in the making
    3. Beating 43 year old Hopkins WAS an accomplishment

Calzaghe gave Ward the blueprint for beating Kessler. Ward even said he studied Joe's fight vs Mikkel. How does his resume take a hit?

Hopkins is the best fighter on his resume but that was hardly a "win".

It has a lot to do with Calzaghe IMO. People were expecting to see Kessler go on and do better things but it hasn't happened.
