joe is still a very good fighter, but he was never the "ATG" that a lot of europeans and fans made him out to be. last night definitely took a lot out of that argument.

ward is still pretty green too. he's wise far beyond his years and is extremely gifted, but i can't wait to see how good this guy is in a few years after a few title defenses. wasnt that only his 3rd time fighting a 12 rounder?

How can you put some of those Names in DEFENSE of Calzaghe's resume and consider yourself a serious boxing fan?

Because I actually saw those guys fighting in their heyday, unlike you, who probably looked at their boxrec and wrote them off.

I don't need to defend Joe's resume - he's a lock for HOF and a common consensus ATG. He's fine enough on his own.

The point I'm making is that it doesn't matter what happens to someone after they're beaten by someone else, especially when years have passed since those performances.

Would Ward have beaten Calzaghe? No.
That's all you need to remember here.

That is too dogmatic, you don't know that.

And I have seen those fighters in their "heyday" and it makes me laugh that you consider those impressive title defenses....

All time great fighters all have a one thing in common - They challenged themselves against the best fighters of their era during their title reign. That's what true warriors of this sport do, and why I root for guys like Pacquiao and cringe at guys like Mayweather. And I just don't understand how someone could be so thick to think that those fighters you mentioned (minus Hopkins) are great wins...

I think Calzaghe is a great fighter, but I also think he was overprotected and it's a shame because we will never know for sure just how great he was.

How many of Calzaghe's opponents have gone on to achieve anything of any real significance afterwards? The only one I can think of is Hopkins beating Pavlik.

Calzaghe obviously is knowhere near Pacquiao as an all time great. Part of it is the fact that pac actually had so many names available to him(and credit for him to taking them on)-something joe did not have.

Also the person you were replying to said Calzaghe would beat Ward. Obviously we dont know but id have calzaghe a big favourite in my mind

Aside from the fact joe is overall much better than kessler....Ward capitalized on so many things (that i was actually sort of shocked by). Ward likes to clinch a lot and completely dominated Kessler there. True, the ref should have been more on Ward but kessler looked clueless about what to do here for eg. Completely different to calzaghe who is far more intelligent and can fight inside as well as outside...and it something Calzaghe is at his best at (in close stuff) and thats just one example. I rushed this because ive got to go..i hope i made some sense

Calzaghe also threw enough rabbit punches in the fight to have points removed, had the fight not been in his hometown. ;)

Youre right, I guess some will say that his second biggest win was now diminished, not his best win. Fair enough. Either way my point stands. :good

You could get 2 dozen dudes out of the saloon bar that woul beat anyone if they were allowed to head butt all nite with the dodgy ref looking on.

I think Calzaghe does take a bit of a hit here but i think people are being to harsh on Kessler.

Kessler is a good, solid fighter but Ward and Calzaghe were just wrong for him.

If you stand in front of Kessler he will probably beat you and can even look quite classy at times doing it but it's pretty obvious that if you stick him in a ring with a slick fighter with good foot work and angles then you can make Kessler look robotic and ordinary.

Like i said, Kessler is a good, solid fighter but styles make fights and Ward and Calzaghes styles are all wrong for him. We shouldn't wright someone of just because they have trouble with certain styles. Boxings history is full of good, and even great fighters who were made to look pretty average by certain styles.

I think Kessler is fighting Froch next so im sure we will see a much better performance from him then as Froch's style should be perfect for him.

Have a look at some of the names in Hopkins middleweight title reign. That`ll give you a few chuckles. Where are they now and who were they then? :D

So does this mean when Pac beat the **** outta Hatton and DLH it ****ed Mayweather's resume?

Or when Trinidad beat the **** outta Joppy, it ****ed Hopkin's resume?
